What is NiGHTS? (And it's not nights, by the way; it's NiGHTS) It's a peculiar game that has millions of fans that have never played it. Other than that, it is probably one of the best, if not the best, game that Sega has ever made (I am referring to the original; I'll get to the sequel later). I have played the game, in fact I own the game, and I've beaten it many times.
The problem with NiGHTS is that maybe a quarter of the people who go on about it have ever played the game (due to the Saturn's low exposure, only a small audience got to play the game and those who did were very loud about it, resulting in somewhat of an "I'm cool too" hype phenomenon), and this results in a lot of misinformation due to how hard NiGHTS is a game to describe.
On paper, NiGHTS is a 2.5d game in which you fly around levels called laps (becuase the beginning is the end and going in any direction long enough will get you back to the beginning) collecting small blue orbs until you have enough small blue orbs to get to the next lap, while going through hoops and spinning around things. Sounds boring, doesn't it?
And therein lies the problem. NiGHTS is a very hard game to describe, especially if the individual describing it has never played it before. The thing about NiGHTS is that it's all so fluid, the controls adn levels are so well-designed, and the game is just so much fun that you rarely, if ever, notice that all you're doing is flying around collecting blue orbs. The entire game feels as if you are playing a cinematic or doing some sort of crazy Mario speed run. The main flaw is that it's short -- seven levels in total (eight, but there's a duplicate due to the way the story is designed) with four tracks and a boss each -- which is why the outcry for a sequel (Christmas NiGHTS notwithstanding) is so loud.
As for the sequel, it looks as if the developers fall into the overwhelmingly large category of people who have never played the original. The changes they've made to the fundamental formula seem to suggest that they never did understand the game and were like one of the blind "fans" crying for a sequel that had never played the original. I sincerely hope that I'm wrong, but I call them as I see them.
The soundtrack is amazing. the story is interesting, the art style is beautiful, the level design is nostalgic, and the boss battles are epic. Those who did not play the original don't understand, and those who won't play Journey of Dreams will never understand.
It's one of those games like Harvest Moon or Animal Crossing in that they seem ridiculous and stupid when you hear about them, but when you play them you absolutely cannot stop.

Nights was one of the few Sega Saturn games that didn't suck. It was created by Sonic creator Yuji Naka to go toe to toe with Super Mario 64 at the time. Even the great Miyamoto went as far to say "If there was one game I wish I had created, it would've been Nights."
I played it briefly at a friend's house and had a blast with it and those who did have a Saturn enjoyed the game. I can't even compare to any other game because there's never been a game like "Nights." And over the 11 years, a strong cult following has built up. If you played other Sega games in the past few years, Nights has made cameos in a bunch of Sonic games. In Sonic Adventure, there was a Nights themed pinball game in Casinopolis. In SA2, Nights posters lined the city as well as a large Nights balloon hovered in the sky in one of Shadow's levels and you could raise a Nights Chao pet. Nights also appeared in Sonic Pinball Party, as a trophy in Billy Hatcher, had a game in Sega Superstars and was an unlockable player in "Sonic Riders."
So finally after 11 years, this sequel is coming to the Wii. For the most part, it's not so mucha sequel as a reimagining of the series but it does look like "Journey of Dreams" has a few new tricks to offer.
After mutilating the Sonic series, it does seem like the Sonic team is really putting effort into this one and hopefully it won't be a rushed mess ofhorrid controls and long load times like Sonic 06 was.
No, I'm gonna pass on this coz it seems like I have alot of people telling me that a 2 generation old game is amazing, despite the fact that they haven't played it.
This is really grating on my nerves.
although, If the reviews live up to the hype, I might well reconsider
