On my first playthrough, I try to get a 100% completion without looking for a gamefaq or a game guide online. After I've beaten the game once and decide to play it again, I'll usually check online to see if I missed anything cool like secrets, items, or special sidequests I might have missed the first time.
If the game proves to be really involving, like you can easily clock 40 or 50 hours into it, I usually won't stop halfway through. If I do, most of the time I'll just start a brand new game whenever I start playing again. Enough time will pass that I forgot what I was doing when I last stopped, and I feel that if I just start over, I'll be better prepared for whatever happens. This, incidentally, is the exact reason why I've yet to beat Oblivion!
Concerning secrets and sidequests, I try to find and complete ALL of them before I beat the game. I like experiencing the entire game instead of rushing through it and missing out on something cool.
If there is a strong multiplayer component, I'll jump in it occasionally, but I'm usually a single player type of guy. Like, if I'm playing F.E.A.R. for the PC, I'll go online and do some deathmatch if I feel like it, but it's not until I'm tired of the single player campaign. Then I can spend weeks playing online, but that's with fast-paced FPS games; if I'm playing an RPG that has an online feature, I usually won't play it. Except for games like Neverwinter Nights, online RPGs usually don't focus on a strong storyline, and that's a must on RPGs for me.
