Where in the world did you get the information that you need a Gamecube controller to play Brawl? Whoever gave you that info really needs to go to the official Super Smash Bros. Brawl website and do some researching themselves.

Actually, there was a far earlier statement by one of the developers hinting to "hang on to your GCN controllers" . A lot of people took this to mean that the game would only support such controllers. Apparently that notion is still lingering around, despite official announcements to the contrary.
You only need the Cube controller if you want to play with the Cube controller. That's all. I'm going to try out all the options, but right now it looks like one of the wiimote options looks best for me.
You got it all wrong. Brawl is like every other wii game and save on the Wii. As for the Gamecube controller thing, you have tons of options of which controller you want to play with like the Wii remote and nunchuk, or the classic controller or the gamecube remote.
