The only thing that the original DS would overcome the DS Lite with is the size, and even that aspect only benefits "certain" people. The DS Lite is designed to overcome the shortcomings of its older brother, by taking into account the complaints and feedback from people who have owned the Original DS, implementing changes to circumvent these issues and release an updated handheld destined to prevent more disappointments, and to boost sales. It is a strategic marketing move that equally benefits Nintendo Corp. and its customers.

well, i bought mine because it isn't a brick in my pocket anymore, games don't look too dark, and even better battery life. i kind of hand large hands, and i've never had an issue reaching the screen. the one problem i found is that you can't use a thumb stylus, and because of that, i had to sell metroid. i tried using the stylus from my old ds, and it looked like it was going to scratch the screen if i kept using it.

The screen is more clear, the screen is brighter, it isn't as heavy, it's design is ultimately better, etc.

because a lot of people didn't buy the original ds because it looked too much like a toy/nerdy compared to a psp. nintendo wanted it to look better so people who didn't like the ds would buy it, but also have improved aspects so people with the normal ds would upgrade so they'd get double the money

The screens are better, and they wanted to tie it in to the wii as well, design wise.

The lite just brings forth sleek and attractive style. Nintendo also wanted to compete withe psp's sensual design.

lets not forget where the power button was too. the only problem i hav with the lite is it doesnt seem as ergonimc as the gameboy advance or possibly the original ds. when i picked up my gameboyadvance again after i had gotten the ds lite, it felt so comfortable. better then the square shaped ds. and plus they should have made curved edges for the lite too since i sometimes end up holding the ds tight and then i'll have these line imprints on my hands.

Well you've got a ton of answers on many things that the lite is better at, so I wont reiterate those. I will say that before the lite came out I still played my GBA a ton more than my DS games (yes I had a DS Phat)... I just didn't like it at all.

In my opinion DS Phat: Top Heavy (hand cramp inducing because of this), Clunky feeling and looking, not bright enough screen to make me want to switch from my GBA with the brighest screen and far more comfortable to actually hold.

After the lite came out and all the issues were addressed I bought one and absolutely love it. It's currently my most played gaming system by far and has been for about the last 6 months.

In summary:

DS Phat = didn't like playing DS at all.

DS Lite = favorite gaming system I have, and I have a lot.

= DS Lite was made for me.
