My reaction was that I was a little surprised, just becuase people usually go for the multiplayer, intense, realisticly gritty graphics, games. I own SMG, and love it alot, it's great playing and great looking. I think it was deserving of GOTY because of it's classical goodness. Just timeless, simple fun. That'll never get old.
When I heard that it won GOTY I was kinda shocked because I was pretty sure it would be Bioshock or something similar, but I am glad that it won GOTY as its an awesome game. :)
Don't forget it also won GOTY at gametrailers, That's an awesome news to me. I nevere liked Mario 64, didn't care for sunshine. But Mario Galaxy is special, different kind of gameplays, cool music, awesome graphics, plenty of nostalgia. Yep, it deserved it.
I'm not a huge fan of the Wiimote, and -- given that I've been gaming quite a while now... you know, watching the Super Mario Bros Super Show and all that -- tend to lean towards more conventional approaches to gaming, so I've mainly been playing games on 360 and PS3 lately, but Super Mario Galaxy deserves it. It might be the best console Mario game since Super Mario World.
I thought that SMG deserved GOTY i just was really surprised to see that it won, i mean it was competing with a lot of amazing games in 2007. But its great it got what it deserved.
