Sonic and the Black knight is coming out soon. The Sonic with a sword part doesn't appeal to me.

I got to thinking about the whole Sonic franchise, and wondered what everyone else thought thought.

Personally, I liked the older, 2d Sonics more than the new games.

Sega sent him into the 3D realm because it was the next step, but they didn't really know how to do it. Everyone knows the Sonic games on the DS are pretty good and those are in 2D just like the old ones which most people seem to like.

Sonic may not be as glorious as he was considered in the past ,but he is still relevant in the gaming world, and the sales prove it. People still love the Blue Bomber.

Sonic isn't dead yet. His 3D games are all pretty lame, but his 2D games are still great. All three GBA sonics and the two DS games all have scores over 80 according to Gamerankings.com. The Sonic Rush games are fantastic!

Allmost all of the 2-D games have been top notch. The thrill of the speed is just so much fun in the older games and newer 2-D ones. The 3D ones have been good or bad. Sonic Adventure games were more fun when I got them, but going back and playing them they were just all right. Sonic levels are fun but rest are meh. Sonic Heroes was my favorite, your focus was usually just get to the end of the level, none of that find this, find that stuff. I have not played a lot of the others though. My question is has Sega ever tried making a 3D Sonic game that just focused on Sonic? Maybe that's all the need instead of putting in other characters and adding gimmicks like wherhogs and swords.

I liked Sonic unleashed, but that's the only recent Sonic game I have. I recently got Sonic Mega Collection and maybe I haven't given the games enough of a shot, but I think they're overrated. Everyone says how the old 2d games are awesome, but I don't think they're that great. I think Sega was onto something with the Sonic Unleashed day levels, so I'm hoping they'll expand on that and make a game just like those levels.

Sonic itself is fine, and I think its universe has a lot of potential. The problem is that Sonic Team does everything they can to prevent anything great from coming from the Sonic universe.

We also really need to root out the provably false notion that "Sonic games have always been about speed", though, too.

They have. It's called Sonic and the Secret Rings, that is if you don't consider the on-rails gameplay to be a gimmick.

As I see it, there are only two things that can be done that are better than just killing Sonic.

1. The developers are given a swift kick in the crotch, preferably a hard one. With luck, this would knock some sense into the Sonic Team and they could regain their ability to make great games.

2. Nintendo buys Sonic. Just imagine what the genius mind of Miyamoto could do with the blue hedgehog! No more stupid stories, no more needless characters, no more gimmicks, etc. In fact, why stop with Sonic? Sega is already focusing on Nintendo, so it wouldn't take much cash to buy them out completely! Of course, this should be done AFTER the release of Madworld or Nintendo would mess it up.

make a 3d sonic game, but make it good, like the 2d games. is it REALLY that hard to ask? SEGA can make racing games cant they? 3d and speed CAN go hand in hand. just make a good game already.

Contrary to popular belief, if they made a game like the original Genesis games, it would not be focused on speed.

Contrary to popular belief, if they made a game like the original Genesis games, it would not be focused on speed.

the DS games are pretty fast and the GBA ones are pretty fast too, all they have to do is add a dimension and viola! good game.

what sega NEEDS to do is, is make sonic kinda like assassins creed, but more advanced i suppose, as far as how you play. its best described in exlpanation form:

-you're running, running, running

- all the sudden, you're headed straight for a wall, but there is more of a hallway scenario, and its turning.

- you hold a button to pick up speed

- you press another button, you jump, once you are close to the wall, in mid air, press it again, you stick to the wall, and one more press will have sonic lunging off the wall, having the same speed as before you picked up speed.

- but oh no, now theres a big gap with a whole bunch of tiny little pillars and such, no rings, no enemies, and the pillars look too narrow to simply run across, or do they?

- you either:

A. tap the jump button over and over to "homing attack" onto them, not actually homing attack, just something similar to the motion

B. hold the speed up button, and sonic will strategically run across them, losing minimal speed, and continuing on.

- oh no, then there are enemies! well you can...

A. jump on them

B. Homing attack

C. jump and grab onto them, forcing them to move and crash into things ( you control where you generally go, think of in TP when you have to reclaim your horse and its freaking out)

D. do something else i guess

- now all the enemies are gone, and theres a vertical wall! it has a round to the corner though, so you could either:

A. run up the wall, holding the speed up button

B. wall jump up

C. Start running without holding the speed button, then jumping up the rest of the way

yea this is all just general thinking... make him more agile, sega likes to make him just go fast. buut implementation is key i suppose, i bet sega could screw this up somehow

I wish they take the "Sonic" out of Sonic Team and let a more competent, enthusiatic, and creative studio develop games with his name. I'd even want Nintendo to adopt him.

Well... Sonic Unleashed didn't help him much and Sonic and the Black Knight doesn't look like it will do any better. When I see Sonic with a sword the first thing that comes to mind is Shadow with a gun and how horrible that game was.

Sonic was one of my favorite franchises along side Mario, Zelda, Metroid and Kirby.

But ever since Sonic Adventure 2 for the Dreamcast its lost its touch.

I think its time to take Sonic behind a shed and just put him to sleep.

You missed one option -- I never cared too much for the series in the first place so I don't think the series is getting any worse. It's always been a poor man's Mario and was never that great. It's Mario games that are going down hill.

It's hard to say -- honestly I felt that they have improved on the Wii since the GCN versions, though I would like to see a Sonic game again that really stands out and sticks more toward its original roots. Not as great as they used to be, but I don't think they're quite going downhill right now.

Well, if Sonic Unleashed could sell 800k after 4 months on the Wii alone, I don't think Sonic is going anywhere.

The last Wii exclusive Sonic game was Sonic and the Secret Rings, and that sold about 2 million. Sonic and the Black Knight has a chance to match that, and maybe exceed it (if Sega markets this game too).

Unless SEGA is willing to disband Sonic Team and put Sonic in another more qualified developer's hands, the series needs to die. It has gone from a fantastic platformer series to some of the shoddiest, furf-a-g infested crap in the modern video game world.

If SEGA can do something about that and make the franchise regain it's fomer excellence, I'm all for it. However, if they continue down their current path of blatant shovelware, the Hedgehog needs to be put to rest once and for all.

They are killing Sonic... in a way.

This looks ok, but the old ones look better. The sword is kind of a cool twist... but I don't like the new style, like how you can only run one way (like Secret Rings).

I don't even think Sega is trying any more. I don't remember the last good game by them.
