many people say it, but when i ask what it is, i get different answers. but to tell you, I hear the word, hardcore more than they say it in the ex-bock three sixty forum :).
so, id rather hear the majority of people tell me than just one person

What is considered to be a "hardcore" game is a game that is very hard and long, and is usually aimed at an adult audience. I myself do not believe in "hardcore" games, I believe that all games are casual, and if you play them nonstop, you aren't a "hardcore" gamer, you're just a nerd with no life.klidron02
well said.
Hardcore games and gamers DO EXIST. It's a way of distinguishing between "casual" party-game and weak games like Wii Party/Sports and harder, longer and more involved games like Gears of War/Metal Gear Solid. There's "core/hardcore" audiences for EVERY entertainment form. You have them for books, TV, DVDs, theatre, etc. Hardcore games exist.Quintinius
theres the core hardcore and causal audiences for every entertainment medium but the games are only core or casual there is no hardcore game. There are games with depth that are ment for people who are already familar with games and there are games that are ment for people to just pick up and play. A player who tries to master any game is a hardcore player of that game no matter what the game is. You could try to master tennis in Wiisports or tetris or Halo or WoW or Animal Crossing. If you devote lots of time trying to understand the workings of a game and use that to make you better you are a hardcore player of that game. Pokemon is a casual game anyone can pick it up easy walk around and battle pokemon but then theres people who go and learn the entire workings of the game and play like a pro. They are hardcore gamers but pokemon isnt a hardcore game
theres no such thing ,, your gonna hear it from fans, of im not saying,
but in reality, the real meaning of hardcore i know of is like an addiction ,
example
a person who is a casual smoker smokes less often then
a hardcore smoker who can' t or doesnt know when to stop ,
the later will hurt in the long run
in a gaming sense theres no such thing lol, games are made differently for a reason ,,
remember back in the 1980s theres was a video game crash much like a depression but only affecting the gaming industry due
to atari among others releasing pac man after pac man after pacman the same basic gameplay no other type,
they can yell wiis not for gamers all they want, but in the end wii is helping this industry just like ps2 and ps1 were last 2 gens,
it evolved gaming in a certain specail way,
and dont say there isnt a mature game on wii because theres alot more on wii then gc and n64 combined
-they are

True, any game can be played either casualy or "hardcore". How the game is played is determined by the player, hence there is "No such thing as a hardcore game" however "There's hardcore gamers".
NOW there ARE games TARGETED at hardcore gamers (as their are games targeted at casual gamers) and I guess you could consider those games hardcore in relation to their central audience!

Thats the most educated answer ever
In my opinion, there are no 'hardcore' games, but there are games that are meant for gamers. People tend to call these games 'hardcore games', although any game can be played in the hardcore way. Tetris is actually pretty hardcore. There are also games that are meant for casuals, that we refer to as 'casual games'.
It's actually pretty simple.

Agree 100%.
They are games that target gamers with more expierence. In this way, I dont think rateings like E , M, T, etc. really take effect. Its just an analisis of game content.

Well said. I really like this. The term "hardcore gamer" is made up by the gaming community to make people with unhealthy videogame habits feel good about themselves. I mean, obviously I play a lot of videogames, and I go out of my way to come to places like gamespot and discuss videogames and find out videogame news, but I wouldn't consider myself a hardcore gamer. And I really don't think that there is a such thing as a hardcore game. I think the term "casual" has evolved from meaning "easily excessable" into "grandma can get in on the fun". And hardcore has evolved from meaning "a compelling and challenging game" into "bloody violence". Its really a shame. I almost can't stand to go to these forums anymore.

Interesting point. This is a pretty good thread, I must admit
agree hardcore game is just a term used by elitist gamers to make themselves feel better that anyone can join in with them so to make themselves feel superior they brand there games as such how is gaming going be considered an art form or medium along the likes of movies, books, and music if such gamers have this attitude to exclude all of the new people i dont see people who watch movies excluding others because they never watched a movie before? or music lovers, book lovers if we want this industry to grow we have to be accepting of all people or else well will be confined to the niche and still seen as kids or adults living in the parents basements, we have to expand but yeah Jaysonguy couldnt have said it any betterNo such thing as a hardcore game

This is the perfect answer. Break up the word into its root words, and it makes sense for gamers but not for games - hard and core. It refers to the solid, dense, inner part of something. The hard core. It's pretty easy to place gamers in that category, but how would we ever figure out which games are part of the dense inner core of gaming?[QUOTE="Jaysonguy"]No such thing as a hardcore game

Brawl is both overly casual and extremely competitive. It depends on the gamer's playstyle, but some games have a bit of a 'hardcore' factor. However, I do agree for the most part.Hardcore games and gamers DO EXIST.
So for you a hardcore game must be a shooter. How about a Mario platformer like Super Mario Galaxy. For me, it's a "hardcore" game. How about Tales of Symphonia. For me, it's a "hardcore" game.
For me, there's no hardcore games. Wii Party and Sports are on the same category as Gears of War and Metal Gear Solid. They are all video games.
