Is there any reason Ninty embargo'd the stuff from the Seattle media summit? Seems odd when you'd think they want to counter all the Gamer's Days going on.

I really have no clue why. But then again Nintendo is very unpredictable.Duckman5
And very annoying sometimes...
Its just another sign of the unfortunate arrogance of the corporate culture at Nintendo, and the reason that Nintendo will never hold on to the lead for more than a generation or two at a time.
Nintendo does innovate and make great games, but then their greed and arrogance brings them down. Nintendo swallowed just enough humble pie this round to smooth things with third parties somewhat, and the innovation of the Wii has been widely embraced, but the minute they get back into position to be number, the old, real Nintendo comes out, the arrogant, imperious, better than you Nintendo that thinks they can not possibley make an error in judgement. Yamauchi's touch will be felt at that company for a long, long time.
What's all this then? Of what "embargo" do you speak?FFXIsAstyanaxYou know the Nintendo Gaming conference today and tomorrow? Well Nintendo has an embargo or restriction of posting ANYTHING givin at the meeting. Such as game info, release dates, pics, etc., until a few days. (Maybe longer) A speech leaked out but the Embargo still holds fast.
Is that really so bad? People tend to want to get news out the quickest, no matter the integrity of the information. So I can see them wanting everyone to get their facts straight before rushing to sites such as this and IGN. And so long as we get the right information in a rather timely manner, I don't see the harm in making people wait a bit. Is waiting a few extra days going to make the information less important or enjoyable?FFXIsAstyanaxIt's not all bad. Yes that's why they do it. To get all there info straight so as not to dissappoint people and that's good. Although waiting is still hard though...

NO it just seems to be like Sony showcasing lots of good looking stuff and nintendo kind of going,"Yeah............wiiconnect 24 um....."
Embargos have a simple purpose. To prevent a particular source from gaining an unfair advantage by breaking stories earlier. Magazines and many major web sites make a lot of their income through advertising. Less viewers mean less advertising dollars, and these sources go away.
Nintendo relies on their sources to reach as many people as possible through all avenues of communication. An embargo allows all these sources to get their story written and ready to report, and everyone knows that they will not be beaten to the punch by another similar source.
People yelling about Nintendo being arrogant are just not understanding the reality of press coverage. Embargos are nothing new, and certainly not specific to this incident or even just Ninendo. These are a common thing in journalism. There's no ulterior motive, and they aren' trying to prevent you from knowing. While it may certainly be something worth looking at in a little different light given todays totally different media situation from say 5 years ago, embargos are a part of press coverage and have been so for a long time.

Since when does nintendo not put embargos on things. they are very secretive and actually it works to their benefit. look at wii. everyone was wondering what was up with this crazy console and it held peoples attention. then when it arrived everyone bought it to see what the big deal was.
Nintendo is definitely the craftiest in marketing out there and it worked.Since when does nintendo not put embargos on things. they are very secretive and actually it works to their benefit. look at wii. everyone was wondering what was up with this crazy console and it held peoples attention. then when it arrived everyone bought it to see what the big deal was.

Agreed.:)
they want to make these things more important than they are. i hate these things... ridiculous.
release info or DON't. don't say embargo. that creates hate
So, what was the point of the embargo anyways? I know that since some internet sites gave out information anyways, Nintendo let go of the embargo, but the information was lackluster at best. All I found out is that Nintendo is making a ton of money (who didn't know that?) and that Smash Bros., Galaxy, and Phantom Hourglass are still coming out this year, which I expected. It's not like any groundbreaking information was revealed.
In my opinion, it was a pretty lackluster gamer's day... but maybe I haven't seen all of it yet.
Can you blame them? They are the only true game company that does not have anything else to fall back on. Unlike Sony and Microsoft who can bail out and rely on other products for them to sell. So can you blame them for being cocky a little when what you do and make is your bread and butter. Besides when it comes to games being made by Nintendo i would be one COCKY, ARROGANT SOB my self. Third party devs call foul all the time on Nintendo for their games not making huge sales, but do not want to put in a whole hearted effort. Piss on Third parties if the Wii was a total flop would they call foul if their games did not sale as good as Nintendo's. Also some are still trying to drag Nintendo's name in the mud saying how the graphics are so last year and out dated. I find it funny how three years ago XBOX, GC, PS all suited every ones need back then.
I know this is way off topic but it jsut sparked a nerve...
The other thing many of you fail to grasp is that it's not always best to reveal all your cards. Sure, there are people that want to know, and want every bit of information about your product. But be honest here, how many of you that really wanted information had already made up your mind to buy the Wii before they released all the details. Releasing info to these people doesn't really do anything to help you as a company, especially when your focus is expanding the market.
The only thing that letting information about totally new products out does is to give your competitors a solid target to attack. It's like the price is right. The first person to bid can always say what they want, but the next person can always go over by a dollar, or bid a dollar. Once that first person talks, they can't take it back, and the competiors can do what they want to mess with you.
Nintendo is making a strong move in the market, and attempting to show how well they've done so far, and continue to do for the year ahead with good titles that people are interested in. If they show a strong future, they will get support from others (read third parties). Keep the momentum going.
The only reason for the embargo is to let the news break as well and as fairly as possible. It has nothing to do with wanting to withold information, it has to do with making sure it's all out there, and that all news outlets have the chance to report it fairly.
