Noob question, I'm sure. But in Zelda, you always enter your own name, so why do we call him "Link"? Just a random name people came up with so we can call him something or what?

I always liked calling him Link, because he's kind of a link to the games world of Hyrule and the real world. That's what I've always though, anyway. Not sure if it's true or not.JebranRushit would appear as though you are right! "The developers gave Link the name "Link" ( Japanese: Rinku (Katakana: リンク), which is Engrish for "link") as he was meant to be a "link to the player" as their avatar in the games. Most games in the series, however, give the player the option of changing Link's name at the Name Registration screen. " http://zelda.wikia.com/wiki/Link

Yeah. I've seen Miyamoto mention this on a few occassions in interviews and such. It's all part of his mentality that there should be a connection or relationship between the player and the game that he/she is playing. It just so happens that the hero of Zelda was given a perfect name that describes that connection. :P
I always name the first profile Link, my brothers can put their names in instead. Anyway it's because that is what Miyamoto named him. Why? I guess in conversations it becomes awkward and tedious to tell people about the new game the "green tunic, elf kid in the weird hat" is going to be in.
I name him my name, Tom. Also, I like your Pikmin drawing.I alwase name Link, Link when i play...what do you guys name him!
AmayaPapaya
i think zelda II gave him that name. I'm not sure how or why though, because you still enter your name. anyway, link is always the default name when you make a new profile and its his name in super smash bros.micahismynamethat... talking about his name... am i the only one that used to think that "a link to the past" was referring to link himself? (hey, i was barely 10 and my english was terrible, i didnt even know the real meaning of the word "link" :P)

Thanks! I used to name him my name but when i found out his real name it just didn't feel right...
Link is the name from player's guides, the instruction booklet and those comics that use to come with Nintendo Power, thats why he is referred to as Link. Why Miyamoto thought of that name, well why does anyone think up any name, you cant tell. Sepewrath
