As classic as the Mario music has been, its been merely catchy since SM64. And as awesome as Zelda's overworld theme is nothing really stacks up Metroid. Even back on the NES, the music in Metroid was doing some insane things with the hardware, and with the Prime the music is an enormous part of the environment, I can't think of a single track that didn't stand out to me.
So yeah, Metroid, hands-down.
I would have to say Zelda music sticks out to me more, in terms of Nintendo games. However, the best music has been in the Final FantastY series...hands down!!!! FF VIII, X, and XII....have awesome music.Tri-Enforcer
This is completely true, Nobou Uematsu is easily one of the best and most prolific video game composers out there. I LOVED VIII's soundtrack. Too bad I already voted for Metroid.
Donkey Kong Country. 2 in particular. Rare I love you. Please come back to Nintendo, we miss you.

Nintendo was the one to ditch that two bit tramp
My all time favoirte defiently has to be final fanstasy 10 and all of the final fanstasy games are great. in terms of music that fits the game the best i think zelda. what game music appeals the least is sonic and the secret rings its probbaly the worst music i have ever heard. all this punk pop that doesnt fit with the game at all. it also get super frustating having to hear ever time you beat a level:evil: but thats why there is a mute button
Metroid, I have the full sound tracks for Prime 1 + 2.
Of course I'm a big fan of the earlier games music as well, but I just love the atomosphere the music in the Prime games creates.
And after listening to the title screen for MP3 it looks like it's going to stay that way.
Edit: I'd also like to give mad props to Chrono Trigger.
