I'm looking to get an RPG soon but I'm stuck between two games: Tales of the Abyss 3D and Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia.

I've never played the PS2 version of TAles of the Abyss. Actually, I've never played a Tales game before. I did play Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow and loved it.

Tales of the Abyss looks to be the longer game, but so many mediocre reviews call it boring, dull, uninspired, etc. I don't know how true it is, but I worry when I read it multiple times. But then again I also don't want to waste money on a title as short as Castlevania unless it's really fun, replayable, etc. I think if its at least as long and fun as Dawn of Sorrow then that would be fine.

So which of the two do you guys think is the better choice? I would also appreciate a mention of another RPG that you guys think is better than both of the above, although I already have a lot of the main DS RPGs such as DQIX, FFIII, FFIV, and Pokemon.

If you have so many doubts about Tales of the Abyss 3D then don't buy it. Besides, Castlevania games are very highly rated; they may seem shorter but they can also be difficult to beat. Either game is fine, really.

Personally I'm more of a Tales fan, but Castlevania games are OK, I bought one for DS a while back, it was enjoyable to say the least.

They're both great games but also very different. Sounds like you have a lot of doubts about Tales. Order of Ecclesia is the most difficult Castlevania on the DS in my opinion but if you were okay with Dawn of Sorrow you should be able to handle it.

if youd never played a Tales game and your familiar with Castlevania, you should give Tales of the Abys a chance, its so difrent from castlevania and also no walk in the park, need to make some strategies during boss encounters and whatnot, pick up Abyss if your also looking for something new and challenging

Well if you want a RPG then get Tales. Castlevania has RPG elements in a action game, but is definately not an RPG. Tales is a great game. It only got 7.5 review scores because the game is 6 years old, and for that matter so is the Castlevania game you want. Imagine if they re-released it today, what score would it get? Probably in the 6 range. If you really cant decide, get both. You can bet both for cheaper than one brand new XBox/PS3 game.

Get Tales. The reviews where pretty biased because it was yet another "port/remake" released on the 3DS in a time when it wasn't getting anything new or exclusive. However Tales is up there with Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest/Warrior, for been some of the best JRPG's series around and Tales of the Abyss is probably my second favorite in the series after Tales of Vesperia. It's also probably the longest game on the 3DS. The only real downside to Tales is that it's 3D effect is pretty bad so be prepared to play it in 2D, still though it's easily one of the best games on the 3DS. Also Castlevania isn't an RPG, if you want other RPG suggestions outside the ones you mentioned, the best I can suggest are the Mario & Luigi games, Partners in Time and Bowser's Inside Story.
