Super Mario Kart and Double Dash. I never played the N64 until after I got it for the VC. I honestly must say, the only way it must have appealed to people is those who played it before Double Dash. After Double Dash the N64 may be, in my mind, the worst racing game ever. But I have heard from other people, that's the impression people get who never played it till thesedays.
Mario Kart 64, just because I remember spending tons of time with the game. It's one of the few racing games I ever had loads of fun with, and the only game where I spent time trying to beat personal scores and records. Also had fun with the Super Nintendo version, but didn't play it nearly as much.
I haven't played any Mario Kart games yet, but I might download MK64 if I get some Wii Points, or maybe MK DS if I get the chance to sometime, and I will most likely get Mario Kart Wii. I think when I was younger I once played Mario Kart 64 at a friend's house, but as far as I can recall that's it.
Mario Kart DS easily. The tracks were great, good selection of old tracks, controls fine tuned down to a tee, and of course online. No other Mario Kart comes close to Mario Kart DS, and I don't think any Mario Kart will come close to it for a while.

if you never played it before, i wouldnt get it because it isnt as much fun for us who dont have the good memories i guess, but thats my opinion and what i hear from several others with the same case. but don't let me stop you from getting it, i'd hope you could enjoy it more than i.
During the 64 age, for me Mario Kart 64 was a great game and one of my top 5 favorites for that console. Then on the GC, Double Dash was marvelous -despite some weakness-, and in my opinion was better than MK64. Finally, the DS version added something important for the winnig formula: playing online and a plus which was the old tracks (and becoming the MK game with more tracks). The point is that with this view to past, present and maybe future (with my shining ball focusing on MK Wii, lol) what I 'm trying to say is that Mario Kart is a franchise that constantly is improving trough the time, each game contributes with the serie, adds value and gives enormous satisfaction to many players (during their respective console ages). For this reason, I consider that is fair to say that all of them are great games, maybe prefering MK DS because it took all the strong spot of the previous titles.
Mario Kart 64 was definitely underrated, and I'm glad people around here see that.
Mario Kart DS is my favorite because it had levels from every single one, added new levels, had a decent amount of characters and karts and featured online play.
The best ones are the SNES and DS versions. Anyone who says the N64 version is good is just nuts. That game was a huge disappointment when it came out and it's probably the worst Mario Kart of them all.
