which is a better game...new supe mario bros or super mario 64?

i know that 64 is a port but i really liked the orignial and i heard new super mario bros is really short...so which do you recommend?

It depends on what you want. Both are good games. Like you said Mario 64 is just a port so you won't get as much fun out of it. But NSMB isn't nearly as long or as challenging as 64. But I does have the classic 2d style of gameplay. I say its a choice of 2d versus 3d, which do you want most? And I think Yoshi Island DS beats both of the games.
