Sorry I was thinking gamespot standards since you know this is gamespot. It's still the best rated DS game though, and if you wanna use gamerankings then yes it's the best handheld game by 0.308.
I would go with mario kart because it has awesome online play witch doesn't seem to get borring. Brain age might get borring but its an okay choise. And if your ganna get a mario game i wouldn't get mario 64, you should go with New super mario brothers.
Get the Kart, fun on single, bigger fun at multiplay. I booted the brain training once a day for 15 mins but not more :), now dunno where it is. And for mario 64, not my thing... its really weird for me. But if you want a real game get castlevania DOS lol.
Personally I think that both Brain Age & Mario Kart are must haves for any DS owner, but by all means, get Mario Kart first.
However, if you're interested in puzzle & thinking games, definitely go for Brian Age soon, as well as Professor Layton and the Curious Village and Tetris DS.
