I personally feel that Pokemon Gold/Silver were the best Pokemon games. Apart from being the last Pokemon games to actually innovate, they just had so much depth and features, unprecedented for any handheld game- real time clock, a more streamlined interface, in built PDA consisting of GPS, cellphone and radio, the best legendaries for any generation, great new Pokemon, a new region with a great rustic feel, a story that was actually a sequel to the previous game's story arc, and the ability to visit Kanto after you were done with Johto.

These were also the only games that displayed uncharacteristic signs of maturity and violence, like the forced evolution of Pokemon that often drove them crazy, a rival who was in fact a criminal, and so much more. To me, Pokemon Gold/Silver were the ultimate Pokemon games.

Which ones were your favourites?

P.S- Please confine your answers to the main series, i.e, please do not include any of the console titles, handheld spin offs, Mystery Dungeon titles, or Ranger titles.

Pokemon Gold/Silver hands down. No RPG ever, with the possible exception of FF's and DQ's maybe, can ever hope to match up to Pokemon G/S/C.

Pokemon Blue, Yellow and Silver. Why, because who doesn't love the old pokemon games. I kinda hate how they changed everything from the original games and just wished they would have made those better and it'd still be a success in my mind.

Red and Blue, mostly because those are the ones I grew up with. Watching the tv show and I even had a poster of all 150 pokemon in my bedroom. Good times.

Gold\Silver hands down, the pokemon games have been on a steady decline since those two.

Out of the three I've played (Red, Blue, and Yellow), I'd have to go with Yellow, even though it was the hardest to start with.

gold and silver were the best but diamond has grown on me, only thing i hate about the newer ones is 1. the contests suck and 2. the inability to revisit the other regions from past games like you could with g/s

call me crazy for liking new pokemon games (but we're only supposed to like the old ones!) but i like d/p the best. its got a good storyline (i wouldnt really call it an intriguing story, i wouldnt say that of any pokemon games though). it also has hands down the best battle system, we've needed level rounding for a LONG time. online is a HUGE plus, and i know GSC couldnt have had it, but that doesnt make it a reason not to like DP more.

the poketech is simply awesome, and IMO one of the biggest editions to any pokemon game so far. theres an app for breeding stuff, for chaining pokemon, for checking how much your pokemon like you (extremely helpful if you're raising a pichu or other love based evolution), and even for checking type resistance/weakness. gold and silver had good pokemon, but guess what? i can still use those in D/P, and alot of my old faves (magnezone, lickitung) got new evolutions. dont get me wrong, i loved G/S/C, but i'm not one to jump onto the "old games are great" bandwagon when its successor is clearly better.

well, n a sheer technical scale, i would never doubt that Pearl and Diamond are better than G/S/C... but G/S/C had a lot more going for it... how do i put it, the overall 'feel' of the game was... perfect. Anyway, they're being remade on the DS, the announcement is due on Sunday, so we'll know when they've been updated if they were better or the newer games.

Red/Blue is my favorite since it was my first but I think Gold/Silver were the best in the series. I thought Ruby/Sapphire was the weakest entry so far and that the GEN 4 games were a giant step back in the right direction. I really hope these rumours of a Gold/Silver remake are true because bringing back G/S with all the great stuff in D/P would be a dream come true for any Pokemon fan.

Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow are my favorites for sentimental reasons. I don't think I'll experience that magic I felt when I first played these games. There was more to do in Gold/Silver, but RBY were just classic and the originals.

I'll have to go with the older version of Red, though thats the only one I played but I just bought platinum and hate the starting pokemon you have to choose from. I just felt more connected with red/blue since I watched the show and knew the song and everything...now I got it and I have no idea what these pokemon are

Pokemon Gold/Silver were definitely the best. I was coming off of Pokemon Blue, and the improvements to the formula were awesome. Imo, the Pokemon series started to degrade after Gold/Silver.

i guess i just felt like diamond and pearl were the biggest improvement to the series thus far. its not that they're technically better made (thought they are) becuase that should be expected 2 games later in the series, but how much better they were made. you said that GSC felt like a huge step up from RBY, but i feel like DPPt was even bigger. it also probably has something to do with the fact that i've never been into competitive battling before this one, so i've spent alot more time with it.

Gold and Silver followed by Red and Blue.
