Several people mentioned TC's GR: Shadow Wars so I looked it up and wow, I didn't know it was like a SRPG or similar to Advance Wars games. I just found it brand new online for $7.
I only have 5 to judge from at the moment, but I'll put a vote up for Theatrhythm.

YES! The two games consuming all of my time at the moment are Heroes of Ruin which is a wicked fun dungeon crawler loot fest, and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy which might be the most addictive game ever released.

All the Theatrhythm praise had me pick up the game ($20 coupon made it $20, which is a more than fair price). I don't know if I'd put it on my top five so far, though - it's a good game but unless you're big into Final Fantasy and rhythm games, I'm not sure it necessarily has much broader appeal than that. Plus there's the awful title and the insipid art style.

I thought about your post a bit and it seems that you could make the same complaint about any game you would put on a list like this. I could say that unless you are a platforming fan New Super Mario Bros. 2 would not hold much appeal for you or that if you are not a horror fan Resident Evil: Revelations might not be your cup of tea. I think the question should be is it a good game for what it is trying to be. I am not a huge Final Fantasy fan (I have not played one since Final Fantasy III on the Super Nintendo) but I do love rhythm games and this one is fantastic. It has a variety of gameplay styles and a ton of stuff to do (unlocking characters, difficulties, trophies, etc.) and while quite a few people have complained about the art style there have been just as many who absolutely love it. I happen to think it is wicked cute (my children do too) and the soundtrack is phenomenal.
Hope you do not feel like you wasted twenty bucks on it.
Tales of the Abyss is pretty awesome. I haven't played much of it on the 3DS, so I'm mainly going on the PS2 version. Super Mario Land 3D is also a blast.
Pretty much only Mario Kart 7 as it's the only 3DS game I own. I used to have Ocarina of Time 3D but it bored the hell out of me so I sold it (weird since I love adventure RPGs -- the puzzles in OOT killed it for me). I think Mario Land 3D, Kid Icarus, and Star Fox look good but I ain't touching them till they're $20.
I bought the 3DS for the damn Pokemon games so you can see how someone like me would be a little disappointed at this point >.<
I know, They seem casual. I think its good to have an open mind in gaming. Instead of thinking your this hardcore ___________, Take a breath, and try some of these lesser games. Don't have too high of expectations and you may be suprised. :)
My personal top 5 1. Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy 2. Super Mario 3D Land 3. Tales of the Abyss 4. New Super Mario Bros. 2 5. Mario Kart 7 It annoys me how many Mario titles are on my list. I don't dislike the games, obviously, but I'm not that big of a Mario fan, so I can't wait till a wider verity of games start hitting the 3DS.

my wii collection has games that people laugh at... i love playing family fued and clue on my ds :P
Super Mario 3D Land is probably the best. There are some other fantastic titles, but they're all flawed in some way, like the Drop system in Kingdom Hearts.
I have actually spent more time catching up on DS games I have missed over the years, like the Pokemon games! And whoever said they bought a 3DS for pokemon games, I totally empathize.
