I don't think that Nintendo is abandoning hardcore fans but it seems like everybody thinks they are. They're giving us MP3,SMG,BWii,SSBB,MarioKArt Wii, and more. Some people have even provided links that say that a new Star Foxand Zelda are in the works and yet most of you are not happy with Nintendo because of games like WiiFit that appeal to the "casuals".

Everyone was a casual at some point. People have to stop being so bigoted towards casuals.

The term hardcore has been lost over the years.

Hardcore isn't to just be great at a shooter. It's to be able to play a myriad of games genres and know the ins and outs of the industry as a whole. To just be great at FPS makes you an enthusiast.

Nintendo is bringing quality gaming to everyone, hardcore to casual.

I wouldn't call either me or the Wii "casual". If I could, I wouldn't have bought the Wii.

I wouldnt even say that, we got Zelda at launch. Now we have the big three coming in a span of 4 months starting next tuesday. Along the way we got things like Bwii, and afterwards we got Mario Kart, Disaster and so on. If Nintendodidnt care about hardcore gamers, they wouldnt spend years and huge amounts of resources developingthese games.Nintendo has simply expanded resources to the casual scene. The day that Nintendo stops developing Zelda, Mario, Metroid, DK and so on and only develop things like Wii Fit and Wii Sports, then I will say that they have abandonedhardcore gamers.

The issue- not that there really is one- isn't "hardcore" versus "casual". It's deep games versus a more simplistic, pick up and play type game.

Nintendo has put an admitted and not really arguable focus on the latter with the Wii (and mentioning Metroid or Zelda or whathaveyou doesn't change that: we're talking overall here- an exception doesn't somehow change the total story). They've come out and said this is their focus and philosophy, and their development schedule and decisions more than bear that out.

It's not a good thing, or a bad thing, just a thing. If you are going to own a Wii, know what it is, and own it for what it is. It will be more pick up and play focused, in its software, than really any console preceding it. It's garnering a lot of sales and attention for them in the 'non-gamer' wide audience.

On the flip side, their development ability is a zero-sum game: putting more focus in one area leads to less focus in others. And more traditional game types and play experiences, along with deeper styl3 games, will be proportionally lesser on the Wii.

Again, not a good thing or a bad thing, just a thing. People need to decide what they want out of a console. That being said, trying to convince yourself (or others) that a console is something other than what it is is silly and self-defeating. The Wii isn't everything to every person.

Hoping that it's so, and trying to make circular arguments on message boards to make yourself feel better about your purchase doesn't do any good. We all know what the console is: so either enjoy it, or get rid of it. Crying about 'haters' or building strawman arguments about "hardcore" players is asinine.

Nintendo hasn't abandoned hardcore games. Wii appeals to a broader range than other consoles, yes, but it's always been that way. Gaming is for fun, not for anything else, and you can buy games you like. You don't have to buy wii fit or mysims. Just buy metroid, mario games, zelda and other games for hardcore nintendo gamers that nintendo and third party developers offer. Other than classic nintendo hardcore games, there are re4, bully, manhunt 2, scarface, godfather, call of duty 3 etc. and i don't think these are for casual games either.

nintendo needs to concentrate on making good games, rather than having "fun" games that show off the use of the wiimote. its a great system and they NEED to do more with it

I agree with Spelunker that it's not hardcore or casual. It's more of a deep versus shallow situation. The Wii has more "pick up and play" games and games that you can complete in a matter of days, but they are quickly working to remedy that problem as more Action games and RPGs start to surface. I won't name any names because there are enough threads that mention upcoming titles, but Wii know what they are LOL.

I believe they havn't ABANDONED us, per say. I do believe they have shifted focus. to a fault. I mean, just look at the hype ratio between mp3 and games like wii sports. I see a commercial for wii sports at least every week! and I have yet to see a televised advertisement for mp3. they havn't really hyped mario galaxy for that matter either. no one truly knows what is to happen after the holy trinity are released. I really hope it's not a year long slew of wii sportsish games. but don't get me wrong i love wii sports, but i love the "hardcore" games too. I want all of it...;)

people have to realize that Nintendo can't spit out "hardcore" games like rapid-fire. It hasn't even been out for a year, and people say they've been forgotten. It just takes patience to create the great, serious games that take lots of time to develop and perfect.

Nintnedo spreads it's attention evenly between the casuals and the hardcore gamers but most of the hardcore gamers think they arent getting enough attention so they walk up and punch little brother casual gamer in the face and then whine at daddy Nintendo for giving casual gamer a game and not giving them one.:D

Inbetween this casual vs hardcore gamer business, us real gamers are able to appreciate titles aimed at both audiences.

Yeah I feel the same way. They are coming out with some good titles, but so many more are uber casual? I want to buy more than three games a year that actually appeal to me.

Unless you're wicked picky there's more then 3 titles this year that you want on the Wii. Then again you could be amazingly picky and that's terrific since games cost money but I think the majority of users of any system can find more then three games they'll enjoy.

As for casuals and novice players, what's the matter if they get games too? I mean why does it have to be that casuals and novice players get one title a year and the rest go to hardcore?

Back to the hardcore issue I think a game like Rayman Raving Rabbids is hardcore, why?

Yes the game is easy to pick up and play but at the same time if you plan on unlocking everything and getting the best scores in each events then you need to work on it. And heck for the people that think that hardcore games need some sort of firepower you shoot a plunger gun at the Rabbids.
