I gotta go with the mustached plumber on this one.

Mario of course. The guy is an icon and no one can really replace him, even link can't. Stamp him on a box and not everyone will know who he is but stamp mario on one and he will be known by all. btw I love zelda games much more than mario games but it's true, mario has much wider appeal
