It looks as if this year we will see zelda, mario galaxy 2 and metroid: other m all released within a ~6 month period as long as none of them get delayed.

This reminds me of 2007-8 when we had mario galaxy, super smash bros brawl and mario kart all released within roughly 6 months. After mario kart was released, there as a very long drought of a major first party release from nintendo. This started what I call 'the lost year' as nintendo fans became very angry about the lack of quality games being released (you all remember the threads on here about people complaining). Now sure there were alot of games released after mario kart, but most were 3rd party and they did not satisfy the majority of wii owners.

If nintendo would stagger better, say one major release every 4-5 months I think this would keep fans alot more happy, and less likely to complain. Think about it, after we see those 3 titles released this year, how long do we have to wait for another big first party game?

Nothing keeps fans from complaining. The situation your describing is the GC and all people did was complain. So Nintendo just started letting the titles flow and people complained that Nintendo couldn't keep up that pace. Fans will never be happy, they will always find a reason to whine and moan. And even with a staggered schedule like that, there would be extended periods where there aren't blockbuster titles. These things aren't thrown together in a 6 months. You cant expect Mario, Zelda, Metroid like titles to keep coming for the entire span of a console.

As usual, Sepewrath hits the nail on the head. The reality is that Nintendo is one publisher here, and regardless of which path it takes with releasing its games, there are going to be down-periods. Do you honestly think that people around here would be happy with one Nintendo-published game every 4-5 months, especially when considering the fact that these games are usually by far the most anticipated games on a Nintendo console? That's pretty much EXACTLY what happened with the GameCube, and guess what? People were still talking about software droughts on the system then like they were last year, only they did it more times during the GCN's life.

Being real here, games have to be developed, and it's unrealistic to expect that one company can keep millions of gamers happy on their own, regardless of how they going about releasing software.

'Droughts' provide a chance for third party devs to take the spotlight. Last year thats pretty much all we talked about - third party titles.

If the new console (as the timeline predicts and aging hardware predicts )they have to get released this year because they needs to start making launchish titles. Its probably going to be Metroid Summer Mario November (if zelda isn't)zelda after october to spring. Thats my guess Nintendo leaves gaps for thrid parties to try and fail

yes i def agree TC. If nintendo can stagger there heavy hitters about 3 to 4 months apart that would be great. of course you can always force your self to wait to by so in so game but come on who has the will power to pass by the game case at walmart, see smg2 or other M and NOT buy it for a few months lol ;)

They have not been that bad on the Wii over the last year or so, and during that time Nintendo has not released anything I really wanted.

I think the Wii's lineup of games has been really underwhelming from day one. We expected SMG, Zelda, Metroid and Mario Kart Wii, but I don't think they blew people away in anything like the scale Nintendo hoped for, and because the Wii is being pushed as "fun for all the family" with the likes of Wii Fit, Mario Party etc, 3rd party developers aren't getting a look in in terms of sales. You only need to look at the sales figures for something like Dead Space Extraction to see that.

SMG, MP3 and LoZ:TP were all really good games. SMG is one of the highest rated games of all time. How is that not blowing people away?

What I want to know is what is 2011 going to be like. Is it going to be like 2008 and 2009? Can we only expect killer Nintendo years exclusively when Mario, Zelda, and Metroid are there? Or can we trust that other IPs will be given the same treatment in years to come? Who knows.

I agree that they were all good games but I'm talking about the broader range of releases for the Wii - what's the point in owning the Wii if the only reason worth having it is so you can buy Nintendo's big four?

It is usually called "the big three." Mario, Zelda, Metroid... Mario Kart is good and everything but its not a AAA title like "the big three." If 2010 is a similar performance to 2007 and then 2011/2012 are just similar to 2008/2009, then yes you have a point. I too am worried that Nintendo is only going to give those three franchises the AAA treatment. But we will see, it is way too early to sign off on that. If Nintendo or its third parties can make other games that are as exciting and quality driven as the big three in the upcoming future then we have nothing to worry about.

That's just my point though, the 3rd party games aren't getting the push or publicity they need and even if they are, people aren't buying them because of a lack of interest. The quality of 3rd party games isn't in doubt for me, but the appeal of them and hence their long-term support of the Wii is. I'm really looking forward to Fragile Dreams, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and I will pick up No More Heroes at some point, but as good or bad as these games turn out to be, it's asking a lot for "casual" Wii owners to buy them because they don't carry brand recognition with the exception of Silent Hill, and even Capcom flogging the older Resident Evil games isn't broadening the Wii's appeal as much as I'd like.

Yes it was just a hypothetical. I do not see third parties giving much of a fight now after recent low sales of their games on Wii. At this point, the only game I cannot say "well this third party game is good but its lacking this (X-factor)" is MHTri and Red Steel 2. So many third party games before it were good but they lacked marketing. So many third party games were good but were completely niche. So many third party games were good, but they lacked polish. So many third party games were good, but they were too short.
