Mario Kart Wii would outsell Super Smash Brothers Brawl??? Did anyone see this one coming? I mean the hype for Brawl was endless and it was way bigger than that of Mario Kart, so how did it end up selling almost a million copies less?

If you know how the market goes, then it's not a surprise.

Mario Kart appeals to everybody, Brawl does not.

MK was already very popular, but adding that wheel put in into a new level of mass appeal.

Maybe if Brawl used the Balance-board there'd be heaps of soccer mums thinking about target test and master hand while doing the groceries. Weird thought.

SSBB to anyone looking at it just looks like a random button smasher! Kart, however, has a huge pedigree and most people that have been near something made by nintendo in the last 10 years or so should have played one of the Kart games.

Give me the money and I know exactly which one I would buy.

MKwii was already extremely popular during SNES days

so i guess more people know about it than SSBB

and besides, little kids who got wii for brithday or something, sometimes their parents dont want them to play brawl for "violence". that's what happen to my friend's little bro

Don't knock the balance board -- it's not only soccer moms who have one. Many people get one just to play skate it and shaun white (and it brings games like this to a much higher level).

Mass appeal, my friend. Also, it's not as if Mario Kart is terrible or unknown by any stretch of the imagination. For many new Wii owners, it's an ideal game to start of with. Plus, the free wheel at no extra charge didn't hurt, I'm sure. :P Even more shocking than that, though, who would have though a game like Wii Fit would have topped everything, including big names like Metal Gear Solid and Grand Theft Auto. Had anyone said that last year, that person would have been considered crazy. But, as we all know now, things can happen we you least expect it.

Not everybody buys Wii Fit for Wii Fit though -- I would have much preffered the balance board by itself (though it would probably only save ten or fifteen dollars).

You mean the same way you can get a Wii Remote without buying Wii Play? Yeah, that's not stopping people from picking it up, though. Maybe it would keep Wii Fit from selling in quite the same way as it is now, but I think you're underestimating exactly how appealing this game has been for many people.

When I bought Mario Kart 64 about ten years ago, I hated racing games. (Well, it was really cheap if I recall, and I'm a Mario fan)

This game wasn't like a racing game and opened up my future Mario Kart purchases.

My Mario Kart collection now consists of Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Mario Kart: Double Dash, Mario Kart DS, and now Mario Kart Wii. These games are for everyone of all ages!

Brawl is one of my favorite games, too.

But, it's not for everyone. It's a bit more complicated than Mario Kart, too... With all the items and the moves.

With Mario Kart, you can pretty much just pick up a controller and start playing.

Well Mario Kart earned it, Brawl's Online is horrendous. Mario Kart takes competitive online gaming to a new level while Brawl fell at the first hurdle. Don't get me wrong Smash bros is a awesome game - just not as good as Mario Kart.

With brawl being the best selling fight game ever and kart less then 500,000 units away from being the best selling racing game i don't think nintendo cares which one out sold the other. And Kart will be the best selling racing game before the end of feburary sold 163,000 last week worldwide so sorry Gran Turismo 3 you are number 1 no longer.

Mario Kart? More competetive than Brawl? There's something wrong here. Also lots of "casuals" don't want deep games and Brawl is also there for the nostalgic factor which non-gamers obviously don't care about.

Brawl was only hyped by Melee players. Kart appeals to more people and is easier to pick up and learn - plus it has a wheel and smooth online play. There's no way it could have lost. It was even advertised better than Brawl.

Um, the majority of people who bought Mario Kart probably don't give two thoughts on online play, and the majority of people who bought Brawl, at the time of release, had no idea how online would turn out. The reason Kart outsold Brawl was better markteting that appealed to most people, which was fun for the family, whereas Brawl was portrayed as a violent fighting game and most people with a Wii wouldn't care for it.

Edit: Gosh darn it I forgot the most critical part: Kart was advertised with a Wii accessory. People are suckers for plastic add-ons.

Brawl stunk on ice.

When I saw Mario Kart at E3... I couldn't wait.

I think that Mario Kart sold more than Brawl due in part to the attraction from the casual crowd, but they earned it as well. Mario Kart's smooth online play beats out the lag filled excuse for online play in Brawl.
