I've always thought this was a crap magazine, but I was at a friends house today and he had the latest issue so I flipped through it. Absolute trash. But the thing that really made me ill was their review of Animal Crossing City Folk. They gave it a respectable 7.5, but in the last paragraph they compared AC to Grand Theft Auto- not kidding. This comparison of course makes absolutly no sense at all, but they said that "compared to Grand Theft Auto IV...the communication in Animal Crossing isn't very impressive." Now let's think about this for a minute here. Grand Theft Auto is a game about killing people. It's about stealing cars and causing extreme havoc. Animal Crossing is a game about nothing. It's about fishing, making friends with cute little animals, customizing your house and clothing. If I had to think of a game that was the exact opposite of GTA, it would be Animal Crossing. I'm not insulting either game- they're both great fun- but I just thought that this really showed the level of ignorance of that magazine. Obviously both games involve communication, but I can't believe it would even cross somebody's mind that Animal Crossing should have the same level of communication as a GTA game. It's like comparing apples to...a series of devestating felonies. Does anybody else think this is crazy or is it just me?

How can communication be a complaint of theirs? It's got the best communication of any wii game due to wii speak just coming out.

I don't read gaming magazines anymore and barely ever take review sites seriously, especially when they review Wii games.

I trust the gamer consensus more accurately. Wii games cannot avoid being compared to HD console games unfortunately.

They aren't comparing the gameplay they are comparing the two multilayer modes that both games have in common where u and a bunch of friends get together and interact with each other in a town/city. They are in their right to do so because in GTA u do have more player interaction. Animal crossing when ur playing with someone or by ur self feels very much the same. You cant really do anything game wise togeather. Playing animal crossing with friends isnt very different from playing by your self new knew modes added, no little mini games u can all play togeather. Dont get me wrong im fine with that. I love inviting friends over to fish and..show off but the games interactivity almost doesnt exsist.

Their Nintendo coverage is never good. Matter of fact, most gaming magazine's (outside of Nintendo specific magazines) coverage is lacking.

^ Exactly what webbut and Jaysonguy said. Just because they're from different genres doesn't mean no comparisons can be made. After all, both apples and oranges are fruit, and they've both got seeds and grow on trees.

Umm... Paper Mario on N64 got 75% and GC on got 67.5%. Quite an exaggeration, and you're still upset over reviews done years ago? On the other hand, they gave Super Paper Mario a 95%.

well that's when i stopped caring about them so that's the last thing i remember. and yes that was an exaggeration, but a 6.7 is still way too low, and i've read that the N64 version got a similar score from them.

Game Informer is just a lousy magazine all around. Be it their failed attempts at humor, poorly written articles or grammatical errors(which seemed to have been cleaned up more recently) it's shockingly mediocre. Plus I hate that they use a capitol letter for each word in their bios at the beginning of the magazine.

I agree that Wii Games will always be compared with HD Console games but AC with GTAIV? Still I agree with your gamer consensus comment, although I do think GS is a review site that has some credibility.

no, thats pretty much what its about. you could argue that theres a story, but brawl having subspace emmissary does make it any less about getting together with friends to beat the each other to death. GTA has always had a fairly good story, but the core of the game play is this: your in a town, and you can do just about any thing you want to other people. shoot them, steal their cars, run other people over in their cars, whatever. an dont think im bashing GTA. the freedom to do what you want is the best part of the game.

And Mario is about curb-stomping rare species of turtle. There, now can we compare how player communication is handled?

That's NOT what the reviewer said. Here's what he actually said:

When you compare the shallow ways you interact with the world in City Folk to a game like Fable II or Grand Theft Auto IV, there's no comparison.Matt Helgeson of Game Informer

Nintendo Power is the best.

GameInformer and has always been biased, with little-to-no coverage of wii & DS.

if you want a good magazine that covers all systems, go with EGM, or Gamepro.

here's a really funny news video from Gamepro's site, teasing Kid Icarus, Mother 3, and Mario Strikers fans:

No it's not, have you even played the game?

The entire game is about setting up a social interactions. In creating that social circle you may or may not need to kill someone and if you do kill someone means that everyone's perspective of you changes. Also every single kill you make in the game you NEED to make or the other guy kills you, there is never one attack in the game that is not self defense.

As for the "going around shooting and killing" that's all garbage. Yeah if you kill someone in the game you get arrested and have to go to jail.

If you're going to talk about the game play it first.

Well, GameInformer disgusts me for the simple fact that it is made by Gamestop.

Its also worth mentioning that according to their crazy scale 7 is mediocre, so they pretty much said that it wasn't a good game.

Common sense would tell you to have 5 be mediocre, but, common sense isn't so common anymore, as they like to say.

I never liked GameInformer -- it's always been crap to me. I just don't bother with gaming magazines really Even Nintendo Power has kind of lost its touch for me because I just lost interest, not to mention it seemed to give a number of Nintendo games higher games than they deserved. Regardless, that's probably one of the stupidest comparisons I've ever heard of comparing GTA IV to Animal Crossing -- at least Animal Crossing has moral value in it and isn't a pathetic game that just taints our society.

They gave it a 7.5 the same score everyone did for the most part. I don't see how that is unfair. Gamepro is retarded, their reviews are only like 2 paragraphs long and don't really say anything at all. Everytime something negative on the Wii comes out everyone claims whatever source it is to be biased. No one thought Animal Crossing was killer app, move on. As long as you are having fun who cares.

Well you haven't proved it. There's really no reason why someone can't compare how communication is handled in two games from different genres, just as there isn't a reason why a dev of a game from one genre can't adopt features from games of a different genre.

I hate GI because almost every other page is an advertisement or some sort.
