Instead of Revoultion. After all its very revolutionary, with the motion sencing and all. Did Nintendo say why they renamed it?

Revolution never was the name, just a codename. Like how the gamecube was codenamed "Dolphin" for some reason. Anyway, I think revolution sounds too similar to 360.

because xbox 2 would sound inferior to PS3 (2 equals worse than 3)

The name Nintendo means ‘luck from Heaven’. The name Revolution means ‘overthrow of a ruler’. People still ask, “Why didn’t they just keep ‘Revolution’ as the name of the console?” Aside from the obvious reasons (already trademarked, internet searching for ‘wii’ is much easier to find the console than ‘revolution’, etc.), Nintendo did keep the ‘Revolution’ name. They simply combined Nintendo and Revolution which comes out as ‘Wii’. In Kanji of the old Japanese (19th century and earlier), the name ‘wii’ can literally mean the ‘overthrow of the gods’. Anyone well educated in 19th century Japanese literature or earlier will pick up on the word. With the focus of the Wii to be entirely on disruption and with the collected comments of Nintendo’s top executives listed in this article, it should be proof enough that Wii is a weapon to not only dethrone Sony as market leader. The Wii is to render Sony (and Microsoft) as completely irrelevant as the industry landscape remolds itself due to the disruption. Wii will ‘overthrow the gods’. Who is the origin of giving the console such a celestial name? I will give you one guess.

:D what do you think?

Nintendo just wanted a nice, short name that could be recognized by all the countries.  "Wii" also refers to "we" in the sense that it gathers gamers and non-gamers together.

I remember how much people hated the name when it was announced.  I personally didn't care; it was Nintendo's next system and I was going to own it no matter what.

And yes, the PS3 is getting it's butt kicked by a system called Wii.  It will be a household name in no time (if it isn't already).

the real reason they didn't name it revolution was because in other countries, revolution was a word that was hard to pronounce or so they decided to give it a simple name for all countries to say

I think wii is a great name. When I found out I thought it was way better then something corny like the revolution. But I read in an interview that often often people in Japan come up with shortforms for things, and they wanted something that could not be broken down, was short and not region specific, and original... Thus wii.

I think they used it for marketing purposes.  Unfortunately, it left the door wide open for a whole slew of Wii-isms.

Like Wii-tarded, Wii-mote, Wii-velutionary...

I'll open a new board an see what we can get...

[QUOTE="lzorro"]The console’s name, Wii, has proven to be the most talked about, the most debated, and the most cried over console name ever. Reggie says that, “Wii means just as it sounds: ‘we’.” But Wii only sounds like that in English. In French, Wii is ‘oui’ as in ‘yes’. There is a better origin of the name which Nintendo is probably hiding.

Overthrow of the gods, AKA overthrow of the PS3 and 360.. :D i love the wii !! lol

Nintendo called it the wii because its simple to say, and you need not abrevhiate it.. and its the only thing called wii, so no confusion..

Microsoft called it the X-box 360 because they were a year behind sony and Nintendo. so they called it the x-box 360 to catch more peoples attention.

Sony called it the PS3 because/.... its the third playstation in the line-up and their too dumb to think of something cool.... IMO

Actually Microsoft called it the 360 because it's supposed to be the Center (Circle=360) of your media HUB :D
