I love this game, both the first and the second of the series. there's something about Mario games that is so great, that makes you don't wanna stop play them.

Now, what is it? I really can't find the right words to describe how and why those games are so great.

I'd need some examples, and comparisons with other games to understand the greatness of Mario games. like Rayman is a good games but nothing compared to Mario. yes, but why? what are those elements that tell Mario games apart from the rest?

thanks guys!

The character physics are just right. I think this is the most important aspect of the games.

What the post above me said.

Also, the fact it can use gravity the way it does, it pushes the 3D platform genre to its limits. I have a hard time imagining what they could do next..

first its bonkers in terms of content. realisim, common sense, logic...forget it. theres no limit to what ninty can do and they play with that. one of the issues i had with sunshine was that it made too much sense. set on a fairly sensible holiday resort with a fairly sensible backpack. galaxy fixed that...anything goes in galaxy. second..polished too nigh on perfection. its very very rare (if ever) that i get killed and think "bloody stupid controls" or something like that. theres no wooly "oh i may make this jump if i take 2 stabs at it from the same spot". its exact, its precise, reliable and very polished from the controls to the level design itself. last but certainly not least...the really in depth story :P. nah seriously the awesome soundtrack. boy do they know how to put an orchestra to good use. i really hope the soundtrack in SS has a full orchestra also.

I didn't think Super Mario Galaxy 1 was great, good but not great. The game was fun but there was no challenge. Super Mario Galaxy 2 took all that good about the first and added more challenge, Yoshi, and replayability. It's my favorite game on the wii.

Its because no matter how many lives you lose trying to jump over 1 part, you keep smiling. Mario games are so much charm, ontop of the fact they are the best platformers in terms of control, level design, replay. Every other sad attempt at making a platformer falls short of Mario games. And SMG2 is the best ever. Anyone who has gotten all 242 stars im sure will agree.

I liked them well enough. A little bit on the easy side for my tastes (especially the second game, though I guess by that time I had had plenty of practice), but both still manage to keep you engaged. Sometimes I think the praise these games recieve is a bit excessive, though...

It has alot to do with production values. The concept itself has been around for a long time, and it has been proven to be fun, but its thanks to the massive amounts of money they poured into the development that allowed it to be as fully realized and polished as it was in the Galaxy games.

the mechanics are the same as theyve ever been, but theyre done extremely well. i mean, there are countless games with jumping, but rarely does it feel as good as in galaxy. a good deal of well done side activities like water racing and bubble blowing keep everything fresh too. however, the real hook is the combination of art design and level design. theres all sorts of things it does right, but succinctly everything is initially inviting and never lets you down once you actually play in it. it all somehow feels cohesive too like a mosaic of toybox contents.

Because those who praise it to the skies probably didn't play SM64 or SMS when they were new.

That's silly.

It's not the people's fault that the games don't hold up today.

Several reasons why they are so great.

  1. Superb Mechanics
  2. Excellent level design
  3. Good variety
  4. In SMG1's case, you have a lot of choice on what levels you want to beat and which ones you dont. I beat SMG before even touching some worlds.
  5. Pleasing Aethestics
  6. Superb Soundtrack

What Super Mario Galaxies is to 3D platformers is what Starcraft Brood War and Starcraft 2 is to RTSes.

There is a lot of variety in the gameplay and how the stages are designed. The game always manages to surprise players with every single new star they have to get. I also love the fact that the game is almost completely linear, it feels like a 3-D version of the original straightforward Mario games.

The "in space" concept allowed for an unlimited amount of possibilities for level creation. This made it wildly imaginative and literally allowed the creators to run wild because they weren't limited.

I have a special place for SM64 but the whimsy of flying through the air in Galaxy for the first time is a unique and special experience.

Generally, Nintendo have a 'recipe for success' when it comes to Mario. The game is designed with specific game mechanics in mind and for a specific purpose. Nothing in that game is there simply by chance, but has been designed to create the best possible playing experience. For example, the mechanics around Mario himself are gradually introduced so that players can get to grips with the game quicker and easier. New mechanics, such as power ups, are also introduced at the right time to prevent boredom as well as avoid frustration and a feeling of being overwhelmed. It can be hard for games to hit the 'sweet spot' of boredom vs challenge, but Nintendo have had years of experience!

I like Super Mario Sunshine better anyway, so, I mean the Galaxy games a okay. I played through the second one and loved it, but the I LOVE the level design for Sunshine. Rico Harbor > Any level in SMG.

And I think it's the other way around. SM64 was something really special, the others did not bring nearly as much new things to platforming.
SM64 and SMS also offer much more freedom than the Galaxy games, thus being more true to the later 2D mario games.

This is what i think...

SM64 brought Mario (and the rest of the industry) to 3D platformers...What can you really do after that or follow up?

SMS brought HUGE levels compared to SM64 and the Water pack along with Yoshi were nice add ons

Galaxy Brought a whole new level design concepts to the table and brought back power ups

What they do next? Combine all 3? Add a Co Op? Whos knows but i have a feeling "Star Road" is going to be involved for the new Mario platformer for Wii U

Also OLD school Mario Fans will always prefer the side scolling mario games and N64 era kids will always perfer Mario 3d platformers...

I personally enjoy the RPG's the most for the story lines
