First of all, you're 13 so do not act as if you're 18+. In fact you're still a kid, but regardless of that I don't think that Pokemon is childish. Though it attracts mostly young people.. I do love it (am 20 btw) but got bored around 45 hours of gameplay and lost interest, unfortunately :(! Bought my DS for this game and then sold'em both later on..

Good times! :D

I suppose it just depends on your mates, i'm 20 and own it, and so do a few of my mates, granted the others do mock me, but not seriously.

The way the game is packaged and presented is kiddish, that is the reason why most people have this false sense that the game is childish and stuff. And i believe the reason to this outlook is due to the company aiming to bring the RPG genre to younger gamers.

But anyone who tries to be competetive in Pokemon will realise that it's not as simple as "Pikachu, use Thunder!" or stuff like that.

You have to assemble a balanced team that is capable of handling most threats and not having too much common weakness, your team should have some strategy composed in it, your movesets should also incoporate some sort of strategy. Then you as the player will need to have a strategic mind when fighting, people aint gonna let you fry their pokemon when u have an obvious advantage.
Will he switch? Should i use an attack that will be super effective against what he might switch in? Should i set up a self buff? Should i switch out as well? Maybe he might not switch?

And once people realise this, they'll realise that Pokemon is a real wicked mind game wrapped with cute colorful ribbons.

But maybe the only games your friends know are First Person Shooters, Arcade Fighters, Sports related games, then i can understand why they mock at you. Cause most RPG players should know Pokemon well =/

I definitly agree 7 year olds can play the game with "cool" looking pokemon and play with there firends but then oler kids can EV train there pokemon stratigize and battle there friends the only thing is that it looks childish. Pokemon is really a game for any age but it percieved to be a child's game

It's because some people aren't able to look past it's art style. Same thing happened with Zelda with the WindWaker and Phantom Hourglass.

I mean you control animals that can destroy cities, not exactly fluff.

You're right as rain I get mocked and been mocked for 9 years and they don't even realize the concept of the game like type diadvantages and advatages. As well as speed, attack, defense, sp. attack, sp. defense, and freindship with it. We all know what is what with it but they don't know how tough it really is. Except in competitions I have to deal with cheaters who use someone elses pokemon because they're too lazy to raise and train them which means they can't raise pets. I quit i the middle of the competition because I don't play liars that I hate so much. Heck even someones mom teased me over it and I'm15! I kicked her hard in the shin for ruining my hygene but you get the point. She was really immature.

I'm in my late teens and all of my friends remember playing red and blue back when we were all 10. I think that's true with a lot of people, and they just remember playing it when they were a kid so they assume its a kids game. I still play it, though, I can't get enough of pearl.

The math that is involved with pokemon is something that only a kid genius would get the first time around i think. Finding out base stats, calcutating effort values, the catch rate equation, knowing your pokemons DV and the algorithm used to find out the attributes for hidden power. so much math, so much. my head hurts now.

Oh yes, absolutely. REALLY smart 1st graders that enjoy reading a decent amount with plenty of words that are beyond their vocabulary, and everything makes complete sense to them. Makes total sense.

People see it as a childish game because it's targeted for children. Sure there isn't anything wrong with an adult playing it, but you should understand why people might see it as a kids game.

I am 30 and I still play it. I take it too work with me and play it at lunch. You reach a point in your life that you don't care much what people say about the games you play. I play games that I have fun playing, who cares if its considered childish?

I think people make fun of it because they don't understand it. this happens with many other things in life. i'm 24 and i still play it regularly. the funny thing is that my younger brother rags me on it but he used to be a bigger pokemon fan. he does it it jokingly though, because he understands what a addiction the game could be. it's true there is some math and calculations involved when you're ev training, but you dont have to be a genius to figure it out. people of all ages can enjoy the game, but i prefer to think that i'm enjoying it on a deeper level than a 3rd grader.

All of my kids love and play pokemon. They are 14, 12 and 9. The 9 year old has trouble with it sometimes and has to go chase down one of the older ones to help him out. I know thier friends are also around 13 and play alot too.

True friends would support your tastes even if it isn't thiers.

I guess because the stereotypical teenager/adult doesn't play pokemon, and when somebody does like pokemon, people just don't understand it. And anything a teen doesn't understand is automatically GAY.

Sorry if it offended you, and so i shall rephrase what i said to prevent more people from getting offended xD

Haha! I must agree, many(not all)Teengars have crappy thinking sometimes(not all the time). =D

Anyways, people tend to judge things by their first impression, so by looking at the way Pokemon is displayed to people, one would most likely think it's a kiddish game. And a game like perhaps, Final Fantasy, would look more mature even though they are both RPGs.

I agree in part that it is the anime's fault, as well as thier shameless merchandising. The merchandising has directed the advertising of the game towards children, but it is a respectable RPG in its own right. People that actually give it a shot know how good it is, and the near limitless customization of a party give it HUGE replay value.

I second this...

There is not a problem if someone like 20 plays it, i mean, its your life, your choices, but its made for kids, you accept it or not

Well, technically, IT IS for children, in Japan and in the US. Even the localization company that does Pokemon for America is called "4Kids Entertainment." Note the words, "4Kids."

But the games are very deep and can be addicting for older people. You can replace the main character with a Final Fantasy character and replace the Pokemon with Final Fantasy monsters and than it will still be a perfectly well-designed RPG.

It's just the Pokemon that scares some people off, that's all.

I beleive the cartoon show contributes to that a lot... The fact that it was something that many of us experienced in our preteen years also gives it a childish association. Our ten-year old selves screaming at our best friends for trading us a Machamp for Blastoise... Ash Ketchum and his dumb adventures... For somebody your age, I'm not sure though.

Everyones missing WHY this game "seems" childish.

Its because the ones who call it childish are unable to separate the Guise from the Game.
Like a guy said earlier

"Its a wicked mind game wrapped up in rainbow ribbon"

If you take away the ribbon kids dont go "ooooooh That looks good", they go "Oh. Looks hard."
Also those who can only see the guise obviously havent realised how Pokemon started out.

As a game. The Guise/Childish-ness was tacked on as a marketing ploy to sell it to youngsters, Why do you think the US/UK Mon' have different names to the *** ones? Because Japanese names in English may not always be cute after translation.

In the end its not down to the game its down to opinion, usually the narrow minded. Read the last few lines of my sig and you'll realise it doesnt matter if they call you childish because ...

Mostly I live with an entire side of a family that thinks it's EVIL!!!

That is so totally wrong and stupid!!

I get sick of being teased over it but I actually did clobber someone nine years older than me................ He let his guard down big time especially for picking a fight with someone in tae-kwon-do. You need to defend yourselves if people attack you over it and don't attack people who play it at all because that's just plain S-T-U-P-I-D

You are a child silly. The age where your elders, and adult society alike, start thinking of you as seriously, is if you impose a threat, or you have done something that may have imposed a threat to someone. or something.
