A thought: I wonder why Nintendo takes better care of Mario in terms of games and character than Sega with Sonic? Can it just be that Nintendo is more competent on taking care of its IPs than Sega?

Please discuss.

Not sure. Maybe because they sell good despite being horrible, so they don't have to waste time making them better. Mario has always been a lot better. Sonic have had what? 2 good games? And that was the first ones. I don't think they know how to make Sonic good. I think they'll just keep making them bad as long as they sell, and maybe try to resurrect it if it stops selling.

Sonic is a hard game to make in the 3d world because of how fast Sonic would run. Sonic can instantly surpass the speed of sound. So getting that feel in the game is quite the challenge. Nintendo brought theirs to the 3d world with Mario 64, Sonic brought theirs with Sonic Adventure on Sega Dreamcast, the Dreamcast game did wonders for Sonic, just so happens, not many played them with the short life of Dreamcast. After that, Sega would struggle to try and recreate that Sonic Adventure style game and wasnt until recently with Sonic Colors that they created a nice fast Sonic game that was fun. If New Super Mario Bros had came out earlier, Sonic and others like Rayman and them would have been able to copy sooner, lack of innovation i guess, and we all know Nintendo has plenty of that.

Sega is utterly clueless when it comes to Sonic. They finally nailed the formula with Generations, then tossed it under the bus. So,

this. Exactly.

The Genesis titles were amazing:

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Sonic & Knuckles

And a special mention to Sonic CD.

And I thought Generations was a solid title. That's not to mention the Sonic Rush series was good and Sonic 4 was decent. I haven't had a chance to play Lost World yet, but it sounds decent.

It's rushed titles and poor ideas. Too much emphasis on speed forgetting the Sonic had been a tremendous platformer as well with slow, methodical sections. Not just rail, loop, straightaway.

Simply put, Nintendo have a far better development crew that Sega can only dream of having.

Nintendo has better self-control. Most companies tend to try pump out games from their successful franchises as fast as they could. Nintendo makes games when they have the ideas and flesh them out in a timely manner. Sonic Team has many ideas in each of their Sonic games but most if not all of them are not executed well, likely because of limited development time.

Sega tries too hard to make each Sonic game different instead of improving from what works best. They also don't seem to realize that delaying a game can be for the best, considering Sonic 06 and Boom are buggy unfinished messes rushed to meet a holiday release.

Sega was on a downward spiral financially since the mid 90's. With cashflow going out the door, you can get a little desperate and cheap with your franchises.

There is a reason nintendo still makes consoles and handhelds and sega doesnt. Sega hasnt had any vision in decades now and it still is a hot pile of garbage.

To me Sega always tried to keep their head above water and drown with the DreamCast. Sega had many great ideas but just can't put them out without a lot of bugs so it hurts them a lot... same thing with Midway.

I think Sega should do what Nintendo did and do a New Sonic The Hedgehog just like Nintedo did the New Super Mario in 2d with nice graphics. Not all franchise need to be in 3D ... look at MegaMan it failed in 3D, look at Mortal Kombat it also failed in 3D.

If anything, some recent Sonic games have been underrated. While the Genesis games are still at the top of the pyramid, the likes of the Rush series, Colors, Generations, and Sonic 4: Episode 2 are very solid platformers with a number of good things going for them. I think it's safe to say that Sonic Team has undergone more drastic in-studio changes than Nintendo EAD has over the years, and as a result, the Sonic series has had an identity crisis at times. When things are kept relatively simple, the Sonic franchise can still offer a lot of great moments, but those moments just aren't as consistent -either during a single game or over the course of several games- as they could be.

Side note: Sonic CD is overrated. :P

I think the problem is that Nintendo don't attempt to get a main Mario title out virtually every 1 or 2 years. I mean the gap between Galaxy and Galaxy 2 was about nearly 3 years. They also seem to experiment with games and the company wouldn't make Mario do what he isn't supposed to. Whereas you look at Sonic it's like the development team look at other games and thinks guns are cool and so are swords and turning into werehogs.

Also when they try to mimic the Mario series with like Sonic R and Sonic Lost World the execution is all wrong.

I think one of the issues could be the character, an anthropomorphic talking mascot trying to exist in a world where those are all but dead--is difficult. So they look for angles, gameplay and story wise to try and keep it relevant. On top of that, like others have said, the gameplay the series is known for does not translate quite as well to added gimmicks and 3D gameplay.

Also another thing is when it comes to the main Mario games by main I mean platofmrers they don't stuff all the cast in it just Mario,Luigi,Toad,Peach,Bowser and sometimes Yoshi.

Whereas Sonic look at Sonic 2006 Sonic,Tails,Eggman,Knuckles,Amy,Blaze,Rouge,Shadow,Silver,Omega and various oother characters. It's like no one wanted them there in the first place.

They did it right their first time with Sonic Adventure. The game plays very well and controls are good. Sonic generations and such have no gameplay.

The reason Mario games are consistently good is because the devs know what a good game is.

@onesiphorus: Pretty much because SEGA's simply not a very intelligent company. Even in their successful early years, they displayed a pattern of making very poor decisions.

That said, I thought Lost World was pretty awesome for the most part. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
