Like everyone else has said, yes it's backwards compatible with GC games. Not only that, but according to CNET, it's backwards compatible with ALL GC games.

Either that or you could tell her about the Wii, just incase you give her your GC and she wants a Wii shortly after. If you did that then selling your GC won't get you much, so I don't know what you would want to do with it then.
