I read about this on nintendo.com, something to do with using the internet but i have no idea what it is. Can someone explain?

It's Wifi. It's the internet connection used by the Wii.

Basically your Wii stays connected to the internet even when in standby, always ready to download message board messages and other stuff (the blue light around the disc drive will glow when you've recieved something).
