Well, the Wii has one Wiimote and one nunchuk out of the box. You might want to at least purchase another Wiimote if you plan on doing a little split screen. Then either a Clas sic controller or GCN controller if you plan on playing either SNES or N64 games off of the virtual console (the CC is better for SNES games, though the GCN can also be used for GCN games).

For Gamecube games, you need to buy a Gamecube memory card. For Wii games, it saves it directly to the hard drive.

Minor correction: Wii games save directly to the internal Flash Drive.

Agreed, at least a second controller set (wiimote and nunchuk combo) is almost a must, my Wii has seen almost as much multiplayer action as single player. As for the GameCube Controller or Classic Controller, I say hold off, at least 'till you have the system up and running. Check the store first, see what's there and what interests you (or, more specifically, if anything interests you) before buying one. I've had mine for some time now and have gotten by perfectly fine w/o one as nothing has struck me as an absolute must have, and I have a backlog of new games from this gen to keep me entertained for some time. (not to mention an actual NES, so I constantly feel like "why bother" but that's me)
