I can believe it. Nintendo have already made one helluva profit off of the Wii, and the DS is still going unbelievably strong, so even if they were to pull the plug on the Wii tomorrow, Nintendo is walking away whistling. However, they will have to step up their game a notch next gen, which won't be for 3 or 4 years yet, but still.
like the guy said, they have been saying this since wii came ut in 2006, I wil believe it when i see it. :)

Where did nintendo say that?
I know the competition has said their going for longer gens but last time I checked Nintendo never said that.
Just because the other guys are going for a much longer gen doesnt mean nintendo will follow suit, the wii was obviously developed to be very different from the other guys so it would make sense that it would go down a different route than they are.

nintendo was the first one to come with the "i want this generation to last longer" thing. if that's still on their plans, i don't know.wow some guy off yahoo games clams this will be the fall of the wii and people believe it man american gamers are sad bunchelbert_b_23just hoping you don't include me, because i don't need someone from yahoo to tell me that after 3 years on the market as the #1, sales go down as everyone that would buy your product already bought it.

Nintendo did not give a specific time frame but they did say that they were not close to releasing a new system. I forget which article it was in. I don't think any company should anytime soon. The developers are just now starting to get the hang of the Wii and another console. The company to jump to next gen first will most likely be MS and they are working on Natal and I doubt that they would release it on their current system only to turn around and announce newer hardware. Sony just got back in the black, so they are not going to do anything. Nintendo is on top in terms of sales after being behind for a whole decade. Nintendo is going to ride this wave until sales really start to plummet, which do not seem likely especially with the 2010 lineup. It would be wise to wait extra time anyway on everybody's part. This way the price of systems at launch can be acceptable and it can give developers time to work with the new hardware more so it won't seem like they are taking forever to put out great games. This generation started about year too early if you ask me. Companies always show off the new system a year before it actually releases, so my guess is that we will not see any new hardware until at least 2012. Even then, that will probably only be MS.
I don't know why people worry about new systems coming out or slippage in sales. Just play the games. I could understand it if a company was in danger of going out of business like Sega did, but that will not happen to any of the 3 companies and definitely not Nintendo. People forget that the GBA and DS Sold like mad during the GC era. Even if Nintendo sales fall in the home system market, their handhelds will always produce infinite cash flow.

In an interview that Cammie did last week with gamespot she compared the Wii lifecycle with the PS2 so it seems to me that Nintendo expects this console to have legs for quite a while. She compared sales of the two consoles and remarked that while the wii is ahead of where the ps2 was in terms of users at this stage in it's lifecycle, she believes there is still a big audience out there for the wii. In other words, she thinks the wii will catch the ps2 over the course of it's lifecycle.
On the other hand, she also said: (11:50 in the video)
"Part of Nintendo's heritage is always be looking at innovation and to start working on the next hardware as soon as we launch a platform so we'll have it ready, when we think the time is right."

Yes but look at what happened to the DS. Nothing anytime soon, they said.
It was like, what 2-3 months go by and BAM! Nintendo DSi.
*very shortly after Dsi release* BAM! Announcement of DSiXL.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if the same goes for the Wii.

those are just updates, they don't feel like it's necessary to announce it long before. with a new generation, though, while not previously announcing helps you keep the sales of the currently available console for a while, people who just bought said console wouldn't spend money on the randomly released new generation, which is BAD for them. so yeah, we'll know when it's coming more than 2 weeks before.Nintendo did not give a specific time frame but they did say that they were not close to releasing a new system. eh, idk, hardware wise the 360/PS3 definetly were built to last a long time, I mean their pretty powerful consoles. The only thing they would be looking to add next gen would be motion controls and they can do that right now and are! I'm guessing if their motion things work out even half good they'll be around for a maximum 5 more years.
As for who said what, I know sony and micro were specific (dont know where they said it but most remember) that they were not even half way through there gens and they said that within the past year.
Imo Ninty saying their also in it for the long run as well is a bluff. If the wii stays around for another 5 years and continues its decline in sales it could get pretty ugly, not quite sure what they could release to boost the interest (like motion controls on the 360/PS3) with developers and gamers, and as far as powerful games go I think the wii is reaching its peak (if it hasnt already) with its very limited tech while the 360 and escpecially the PS3 have a lot of potential still tech wise.
As far as keeping us gamers interested their biggies (mario, zelda, metroid) are a must in like 4-5 years and if they all came out on the wii AGAIN would they be a big? I mean half the appeal in a long awaited zelda or mario is because its on a new console with new possibilites. I cant see SMG 3 being that big of a deal in this case :P
As for people being interested in new consoles, eh, its kind of hard to blame them.
Theirs alot of excitment in a new system like new games, hardware, features, POSSIBILITES!
However as far as the wii goes, yeah I agree with you. We have a new mario, zelda, metroid, pikmin (think thats enough) all on the way within the next year so there is no reason to not still be super excited with the wii! If anything the next wii is still well over a year off so page me in at least 9-10 months and we'll talk wii 2. Realistically thats no where near the case unfortunatly with so many wii 2 threads being made on a daily basis, hopefully its just because of E3 coming up (even though its still quite a ways off) and it all dies down after! :(

Nintendo is a fan of the lifecycle of a system. I don't think they would pull an MS and put out a new system and cut the Wii's lifespan short. Nintendo still has wii motion plus they have to use. Why would they put an attatchment out to strengthen the Wii and then come out with a new system? They could I suppose, but I don't think Nintendo would be that lame but anything is possible in today's market.
It would just seem like a rather dumb move to talk about a new Wii since we are so close to games that will use the attatchment such as Red Steel 2, Zelda, and so forth.

Well theirs always a decent chance that the next console will use M+ standard. If that where the case we could use the M+ we have now because they would be backwards compatible (gc controlers bc with the wii) so it wouldnt really be a lose to us.
And yeah we definetly dont need to be talking about it with so many great games still on the way. But these topics keep poping up front page so......
I agree the Wii will slip significantly this year, what with games like Super Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid: Other M and the impending Zelda Wii hype, there's no way Nintendo can keep up with the strengthening powers of the PS3/360.
This predection is at least 4 years old.
The only thing that can kill the Wii is the next Nintendo console.Willy105
I think this statment is completely true. The Wii is even dragging TEH GRAFIX consoles to motion controls.

They could do BC with motion plus but wouldn't it make more sense to have it built in already from the start? The reason that more games don't use it is because not everyone has the add on. All I am saying is if Nintendo would probably make the motion plus technology already part of the controller in their new system hence not needing BC for motion plus. Since they want people to buy motion plus, it wouldn't make sense to come out with it and then not use it but then again most peripherals are like that. We will just have to wait and see. I would rather developers maximize their performance on these current systems than worry about building games for new ones.
The Wii as well as sony's system are just now starting to show off what they can really do. Yeah there were games here and there for the first 2 years but now I think we are really going to see some stuff. Sin and Punishment 2 seems to take advantage of what Wii can do. It seems more than just pure rail shooter. Zelda will use motion plus. Galaxy 2 seems harder and more exploration oriented than the first game. Metroid other M goes back to the original style of the 2D games while adding elements from the 3D games. People need to play the games on the current generation systems rather than commenting on the next generation systems. True it's nice to see something new, but that new feeling you get when you play a system wears off in about a week maybe a bit longer.
When I got PS2, it was amazing for like the first couple of days and then after the first week, it was just "yeah I got a PS2."

Well, yeah by M+ "standard" I meant having it built in, BUT you can also use your old wii-mote with M+ attached.
And yeah, peripherals are always super risky as to wether they will get support (looks at N64 DD) and really should be avoided.
I wouldnt really compare the wii to sony's console as far as untapped potnetial, not by a long shot :P I mean the Wii uses tech very similar to last gen, developers have been using it for years and it starting to reach its limit (many would argue it already has) the PS3 uses very advanced tech in comparison that developers have yet to really even get their head around to begin utilizing.
The only thing the wii really has that can be tapped in to is the potnetial of the M+ which hopefully Zelda Wii will do. As for SMG 2 and Metroid, I really dont see anything about those games that is reveloutionary or that will show off new potential in the wii's motion controls or the system itself that we havent already seen.
I can see nintendo coming up with a newer wii fit that is easier for fat and lazy people to use. People will buy a wii for that sole purpose because they are stupid. There's a lot of fat, lazy, and stupid people.

The Wii will last until 2011 when we see the new console
wes008
I'm still hanging on to a hope and a prayer that it will come out this year :D
This year would be tough
I don't think we'll see it at all this year. If we see no signs of it in 2010 it means that Nintendo is really happy with their new console and thinks it doesn't need R&D with the public. The Wii was shown early because Nintendo wasn't sure about the Wii and wanted the public to give them feedback.
The signs for new hardware are already here. Besides the whole "new every 5 years!" we also know that they have consoles right now that are doing HD resolutions. That's what Metroid Other M has been playing on and why it's been looking so sharp and why Nintendo finally said that everything we see of Metroid Other M isn't a resolution available on the Wii. So there's HD consoles already, we just don't know what part of the development process they're at right now
The only thing that can kill the Wii is the next Nintendo console.Willy105Exactly. And with all the stuff coming out 2010, it won't end... Think about it. If the end the Wii, with nothing on the table, they'll lose money fast. They'll also lose face to Sony and Microsoft. Until Nintendo brings out 5th Gen, or Wii 2, it's not ending.
look, here's the thing... there's only so many people in the world that play console games... and they all already own a Wii... so of course sales of the console itself are going to decline... people don't need to buy 2 or more of the same console. There's more to it though, to think that Nintendo will be slipping in 2010 is ridiculous with the line-up of games they're bringing (Mario Galaxy 2, expected announcement for new Zelda, Metroid Other-M, etc) and the current chart dominance of New Super Mario Bros Wii.
I think this year will be the "make or break" year for the Wii so to speak. Over the past few years they've managed to hold onto the #1 spot in sales due to their revolutionary motion sensored control technology, which is obviously what set them apart from the rest of the competition. Now that Sony and MS are attempting to make a move into that realm as well, it may take some steam away from the Wii, due to the fact that it may no longer considered so "unique" in the current market. If the Wii can weather the storm, and still remain competitive in spite of MS and Sony's new technological advances, then the console will surely stick around a few more years (at least 2-3). If on the other hand it ends up lagging behind the other two consoles, then it wouldn't be too far-fetched to expect a Nintendo to pull out something new by the end of next year perhaps.
In any case, Wii owners can take comfort in knowing that 3rd party developers are adapting more and more to the Wii technology, which will thus likely result in better 3rd party titles. The fact that Nintendo is also gonna release a slew of great games this year such as Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M will also provide some reassurance to Wii owners everywhere.
