Being a fan of Gamespot and video games in general, I thought it might be of interest to fellow gamers that the Nintendo Wii Fit has generated quite a stir even in the world of medical rehabilitation. Much like the original Wii, the Fit helps open a whole new dimension for physical rehab therapies. The Fit specifically has huge potential for helping individuals whom have had neurologic injuries which cause balance and lower extremity coordination problems. Some of the balance-related training programs (ie hula hooping, tightrope walking, ski jumping, yoga) are not only fun but therapeutic. With our great overall success of using the Wii in the world of medical rehab, the Fit will undoubtedly push Wii-Hab to a whole new level.

For more info, check out my recent CNBC TV Interview where we specifically talk about the Wii Fit:
http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?video=724249289

And keep in mind that I am not paid by Nintendo. If you're interested in using the Wii for physical rehab purposes, be sure to to consult with your own Rehab physician and therapists to see if it may be right for you.

It's great to hear that this is the case. Many users here in the board have always used the rehab point, both in hospitals and convalescent centers, as a very strong point to the WiiFit. I applaud Nintendo for taking the risk and working on something like this, that can be used for more than just gaming.

I thinkits also another step Nintendo has taken in releasing games/add-ons that are less for kids and more for adults. I can't imagine most of the gamer kids I've seen enjoying, or even playing something so close to exercise :P I think it looks awesome, I plan to get it for myself; getting in shape while playing videogames sounds pretty sweet to me!

That's great. The whole idea of Wii Fit is wonderful. It's great for rehabilitation like you said, but also it'll be a tremendous thing to have a device that gets more people active.

Thanks for posting that.

Oh, and I love you username. :)

EDIT: Watched the video, god that fat old guy is annoying. Apart from him, great stuff.

I like the idea, especially since I am sort of in that line of work at the moment (student athletic trainer).

This is nice and all but I kind of feel we are moving away from talking about video games, don't get me wrong Im all for helping people that were invloved in accidents or whatever but more games please? :? I know a lot of people **** about this but we were led to believe the Wii would revolutionise games as we know them, not the way we exercise after surgery.

First the military in the U.S. wants the technology implented in the Wii, (sorry don't have the link) and they want Nintendo's technology to help those in rehab. Nintendo truly is changing the world.

I think they're trying to make some software for people OTHER than little kids... reaching new age groups, people who have never gamed before, and incorporating physical activity into games sounds pretty revolutionary to me. I work in a gaming store and 90% of the customers are fat, lazy kids who spend too much time sitting, playing games. This Wii Fit will be good for everyone, even if the little gamer kids don't support it.

The only problem I see with Wii Fit is: If an extremely obese person uses it, couldn't it break? (seriously). They should say how much weight it could hold on the box.

Im saying after a while it could break, not first time standing on it.

Any chance at all that you can grant us little more information on what exactly won't happen? I'm not sure if you're talking about it being a success (which it already is and will continue to be) or that it won't help with rehab, or perhaps something else. Basically, please elaborate for us, will ya'?

It will say, the Japanese version of the board has a limit of 300lbs (about 136Kg) It is believed that the board for America will be made to handle more.

lol, very excellent point... I'm sure it'll have a 'recommended maximum weight' or something to that effect, Nintendo is really good for its health/safety precautions.

There was a link (sorry don't have that either  ) saying that the weight limit on the Balance Board was 350 lbs. That means a LOT of people here in the U.S. won't be very happy to hear that.

Hahah, thats unfortunate... most of the people who need it the most won't be able to use it! Oh well, it'll be great for the rest of us... and if someone over 350 lbs wanted to play it badly enough, at least it'd be motivation to lose some weight ;)

I'm sorry, but, WHAT? Yes, I realize that there are those of the elderly community that are unable to stand, but even people that are past the 100 years of age are able to stand and walk.

I thought that was the limit for measuring BMI, and that the board could withstand quite a bit more than that. There was a link in thread a few weeks back.....

Nice. I've heard these things happen before. For rehab, military, diagnosing, gaming is pushing technologies even in the medical area which sometimes makes me wonder whether we actually care about healthcare.
The previous time i think it was this skintight motion suit. You know the ones they use to integrate peoples movements into a game. This will be used for people using motorized limbs. They are far more accurate now in sensing what the person wants to move in what way.

We're not just supporting fun, but soon we'll be supporting the army, healthcare, education, :P

I actually am disabled and although I am no fan of Wii Fit because of the injuries it may lead to I would like to see it in action in person as it could possibly help me with my orthostatic intolerance (the most annoying part of having Postural Orthostatc Tachycardia Syndrome, which is a Dysautonomia). I have some heart problems along with my condition (mitral valve prolapse and a dilated aorta), but considering my doctors want me to enter a cardiac rehabilitation program I can't see the harm in it. I'll ask my docs what they think. I'm 6ft tall and weigh 163lbs, so I don't need to lose weight, but Wii Fit could be useful to me.

Well, you may be right. Gosh, if I only I had that link. I do remember the number 350, though.
