What happens to all the games i downloaded onto my Wii when Wii 2 comes out? Would i have to pay for every game again to put it on the new console? or can you transfer games from wii to wii 2?

Spent 200$ getting all the old games like Mario 64 and Zelda and it would be nice if they could transfer over to the new System.

You'll have to repurchase them, due to the way Nintendo handles licensing on the Wii and DSi. We'll see exactly what they do first with the 3DS launch, though, and I'm expecting nothing - people who have purchased DSiWare will have to buy them again or simply not have them on their 3DS.

well, first off al we dont kno about the next gen console yet, and i hope we dont for a long time.

second we really dont know i the download service wil make a comeback, its pretty much dead on the wii, so im not sure how it will turn out on the next gen console.

an ya we all might be screwed, which is why i have been taking extra care of my wii, nintendo consoles usually last for a long time, and i hope my wii ill last for a really long time...

haha, Nintendo will have HD, built in Wiimotion plus (in addition to some other features), and still no DVD or blu ray player :P. Oh and there is something called the 3DS that is going to ROCK! oh wait, everyone already knows that ;).

In all seriousness, noone knows what is going to happen with the Wii 2, but I am guessing they will not provide a way to transfer the games. But who knows, maybe they will surprise us!

True. You can apply that to this and some other things, such as online.

I was wondering that to. Maybe you can transfer them with an SD card, but I could see piracy problems with that. I don't know!

This gen was the first we ever saw of Down load content (PS2 and Xbox had very basic online features that don't count) There is no precedent on what happens to DLC when a new system comes out.

If normal Back Wards compatibility with Nintendo has any barrings to this subject though, (GC -> Wii ) (GBA -> DS) there might be hope still for DLC to transfer to next gen.

Well they are tied to Club Nintendo accounts (which for some reason everybody seems to forget) that Nintendo already uses to transfer games if your Wii is broke. My guess is they will let you redownload everything on the Super Wii without having to pay. I know Nintendo does weird things and sometimes screws us over but I can't see them not letting people who have spent lots of money on Wiiware/VC games not transfer them. It helps ensure loyalty and is good customer service. You never know of course but that is my guess, the first test is of course to see if they let you transfer DSi games to the 3DS.

hmm thats a good idea, as long as it transfers and you cannot copy, cause that would NOT be allowed by any gaming company haha.

That's assuming you've tied a Club Nintendo account to your Wii - I don't think it's required in order to purchase downloadable games. Ideally it should have been required for both the Wii and DSi as they could use it as a springboard for transferring content with the next console (provided it's coded into the OS, where it's most definitely not this time around). That's why you have to physically mail in your current Wii if you want to transfer its games to a new one.

Yeah its not required it's just smart to do. I can at least go online and it shows the games I've downloaded for my Wii and DSi, so I at least have some kind of proof that I have the licensees for them. People can always create and link the club Nintendo account before they switch to a new console if they have that option though. I suppose the cable idea might work too. I'm sure they'll work something out. Oh and to Metal_Mario99 it's good to transfer them because you don't have to keep your Wii hooked up, you get the convenience of having all your downloaded Nintendo games on the same system, and you should hopefully benefit from possible upconverting & HDMI output that a future Nintendo console should have.

they way Nintendo has been handling it now tells me that if you want your games transfered, they'll have instructions with a new system that shows you how to log onto somewebsite whether it be Nintendo or some form of the Shop channel(or something that is complicated compared how easy it could actually be) and create an account. You'll probably have to sign in on the new system, and it would transfer them after about a month of slow connection speed.

You'll have to play all those games the old fashion way. Plug in your soon to be old Wii and play them that way. Haha. I really hope Nintendo let's you just transfer them over somehow, or if you have a Club Nintendo account just put in the information into Wii2 and the data will be sent over. Very unlikely though.

I love NIntendo for their backward compatibility ideas. GBC could play regular GB games. and the GBA could play GBC and GB games, then DS could play GBA games. Gamecube could play GB GBC and GBA games, and Wii could play just about everything if you include the down loadable content. I really really hope they come out with something to link the VC games to the new console.

Can't really say until the Wii 2 specs are released. But don't forget your Wii DOES have an SD card slot. If the Wii 2 does as well, it'd be easy to put all yer VC games onto the SD Card and pop it into the Wii 2.

This is simple and easy. IF nintendo doesn't allow it, it'll be on purpose to get you to rebuy all the VC games you downloaded. If this happens, bravo sierra on nintendo. Would seriously make me consider not getting a Wii 2.

It won't work for the same reasons it doesn't work to transfer games you've purchased to another Wii. The method Nintendo chose to do the licensing (locked to console) will result in mail-in offers being the only way to transfer it over. IE, you'll have to mail in your entire Wii for them to verify the contents to go on a Club Nintendo account, or you'll also have to mail in your Wii 2 along with the Wii for them to physically transfer the files.
