Must-Haves (the Best of the Best)

If you don't have one of these games, there's a good chance you should buy it, because you'll probably like it. These are the most widely appealing Wii games, the best of the best:

1.Super Mario Galaxy- 3D Platformer

By perfectly combining gameplay elements from the 3D and 2D iterations of the Super Mario games, Mario Galaxy is a more-than-worthy sequel to Mario 64. Winner of Gamespot's Best Wii Game, Best Platformer, Best Artistic Graphics, and Game of Year 2007 Awards.

2. Super Smash Bros. Brawl- Quasi-3D brawler

Duke it out with all the big Nintendo characters in this simple to play yet difficult to master fighting game. Online multiplayer is available along with tons of unlockables to make for a long-lasting experience. Up to four players can play locally in several game modes. This game has something for everyone.

3. Mario Kart Wii- Racing

Play as characters from the Mario universe in this weapons-based racer. Duke it out in races or battle mode with up to four local players or twelve players online. The game comes packed with one Wii Wheel that helps the motion controls feel much more natural, though you can use the remote+nunchuck, cIassic controller, or Gamecube controller as well.

The online features of MKWii are fairly robust for a Wii game, including tournaments, regular races, battle modes, leaderboards for time trials, and exchangeable ghosts

4.New Super Mario Bros. Wii- Platformer

New Super Mario Bros. is a side-scrolling platformer in the tradition of the original Super Mario Bros. games for the NES and SNES. It combines elements from nearly all of the 2D games to create an experience that feels familiar but fresh. New to this version is the ability to play through the game with up to four players on-screen at the same time. Because all of the characters can interact with each other (pick each other up, bounce off each other's heads, even kill each other with turtle shells), it makes for an insane but incredibly fun experience. There are also two multiplayer battle modes but no WiFi support.

5.The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess- Action/Adventure



Twilight Princess goes back to the more realistic art styIe of the N64's Ocarina of Time and manages to mostly keep pace with that cIassic. Link can turn into a wolf to take on the familiar mix of puzzles and action in the land of Hyrule.

6.Metroid Prime Trilogy - First-person adventure

The Trilogy includes updated versions of the first two Prime games with Wii motion controls, slightly updated graphics and load times, 16:9 aspect ratio, and new unlockables. It also includes an unchanged version of Metroid Prime 3. Each game provides a good balance of exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat, all set in beautiful environments that are worth exploring. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes provides an offline split-screen multiplayer mode with up to four human players.

7.Super Paper Mario - 2D/3D platformer/Action RPG

Super Paper Mario is a unique mix of 2D and 3D platforming with RPG elements, such as talking to other characters, buying items, and leveling up. The battles are real-time and somewhat reminiscent of cIassic Mario action.

8.Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition - Third-person shooter

Although it's a Gamecube port, Resident Evil 4 is a worthy purchase because of its superior control scheme designed around the Wii controller. If you never owned this game for the Gamecube, it's worth checking out for the Wii.

9. Okami - Action/adventure

Okami for the Wii is a fantastic adventure game based on Japanese Mythology. The brightly colored worlds and enticing story really bring you into the game. Okami lasts approximately 30+ hours on story-driven gameplay alone, plus enough extras to last about twice as long. There are varying RPG elements such as the ability to upgrade health and ink capacity as the game goes on; but when it comes down to it, Okami is an adventure game in the vein of Zelda. If you are looking for an epic adventure on the Wii, Okami is the game to get. (submitted by Phantom5800)

10.Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure - Point and click adventure



Zack and Wiki is a surprisingly good puzzle game. Don't let the cutesy graphics and quirky characters turn you away from this game's excellence; the puzzles are challenging and fun, even for adults. Winner of Gamespot's Best Adventure Game of 2007 Award.

11.No More Heroes - Action

No More Heroes is a simple beat-em-up with a lightsaber. The story and presentation are quirky and self-conscious as a parody of the nerd lifestyIe. The gameplay consists of doing random jobs and missions around a city in order to earn enough money to fight against ten fellow assassins. The combat is a combination of button mashing and remote waving, but it's actually pretty satisfying. Each boss battle is unique and requires a different tactic to win.

12. Boom Blox Bash Party- Puzzle

Boom Blox presents a series of physics-based puzzles, the objective being either to keep structures made of blocks from being knocked down or to knock them over by various means, using the Wiimote to throw, shoot, and grab at the blocks. Boom Blox features a realistic physics system; the angle at which a projectile is launched and how fast it is thrown as well as the mass of the projectile and the type of blocks it comes into contact with influence the results of an action. Bash Party improves over the original by offering more tools and more modes, including an online community to share user-created levels. (submitted by king23_, updated by JordanElek)

13. Punch Out - Boxing (puzzle)

Punch Out is essentially a puzzle game under the guise of a simple boxing game. Each of the 13 opponents has a unique set of moves and tells. Once you figure these out, you'll have to use a combination of memorization and twitch reflexes to defeat them. They start out pretty easy, but the difficulty gradually ramps up to an intense challenge. With several single-player modes, challenges for each opponent, and a basic two-player versus mode, there is no lack of replayability. It retains all the charm of the original NES and SNES games, and it's hilarious.

Party Games

The Wii is known to be the life of the party. At the end of the night, it's usually the one with a lampshade on its head while everyone else is passed out with sore arms. There are a lot of terrible party games on the Wii. These are some of the ones worth checking out:

1. Wii Sports Resort

This mini-game collection includes 12 sports, each with at least two modes of play: swordplay, wakeboarding, frisbee, archery, basketball, table tennis, golf, bowling, jet skiing, canoeing, cycling, and air sports. The game comes packed with one Wii Motion Plus attachment, which allows for more precise motion controls and is required for every controller in every mini-game. Some games let you share one controller among up to four people, but others require each player to have a controller.

2.WarioWare: Smooth Moves

This collection of insanely quirky but fun microgames makes great use of the Wii remote's motion capabilities. Some multiplayer modes support up to 12 players, so it's a great game for a living room full of friends.

3.Rayman Raving Rabbids (and Raving Rabbids 2)

Rayman Raving Rabbids is the spinoff from the popular Rayman Franchise. If you're looking at either of these titles for a platformer that uses Wiimote functions, you'll be disappointed. Instead these titles offer a variety of extended mini games (an assortment of events that last for a few minutes rather then a few seconds like WarioWare). The games combine Wiimote movements and humor. Newcomers to the series would be best to get the original version, while buyers of the first who want a second dose of Rabbids would be advised to get the second (though the humor is still top notch, the events aren't as fresh feeling as the original). 4.Mario Party 8

Mario Party is a virtual board game with playable minigames at the end of each turn. Up to four players can compete to earn the most stars before the game ends.

5.Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz

Super Monkey Ball is a platformer game where you must tilt and flick the wiimote to help get the monkeys to the end of the stage. Don't take this game too lightly, it can get pretty difficult later on. Also includes minigames, some only requiring one wiimote. Returning minigames from the series include Monkey Race, Monkey Bowling, Monkey Wars and Monkey Target. Other games include Dangerous Route, where you must guide your monkey to the finish without falling, Whack-a-Mole, where you use the Wiimote to hit moles, and Alien Attack, where you must attack aliens. Online Multiplayer Games

The list of Wii games that offer online gameplay is growing, and some of the best are listed below:

1.Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Reflex Edition

Modern Warfare Reflex Edition is a direct port of 2007's Call of Duty 4, and it features all of the online modes of the original. The main differences in the game are the visuals and the controls, which are fully customizable.

2. The Conduit

The Conduit is a traditional first-person shooter that offers the most varied online multiplayer experience on the Wii. It features fully customizable controls, WiiSpeak support with friends, a simple workaround for friend codes, lobbies for matches, a maximum of twelve players in a match, and several different game modes. There are no offline multiplayer modes. The Conduit is best known for its excellent controls and technically proficient graphics.

3.Medal of Honor Heroes 2

The online mode of this World War II first-person shooter allows up to 32 players at once. EA Nation provides leaderboards, lobbies and a friend-codeless account. Multiplayer modes include deathmatch, team deathmatch, and capture the flag. Connection quality is generally lag free. Offline multiplayer is not available. Winner of Gamespot's Most Surprisingly Good Game and Most Improved Sequel of 2007 Awards.

4.Guitar Hero World Tour

Although friend codes need to be exchanged to play against your friends, you can play any random person online by creating your own match or joining an existing one. Play alone or with friends online, in either one-on-one competition or cooperatively as part of a band. Downloadable songs are available for a few dollars each through the game's online store.

5. Rock Band 2

Rock Band 2 for the Wii is the latest addition to the Rock Band series featuring new instruments, new songs and new features. One of the key features the Wii version has is online play which was missing in the last game. You can play up to 3 other players in Band Quickplay or team up with 3 others and battle another band in Battle of the Bands. Score Duel and Tug of War come back with 2 player online modes. Another new feature is Downloadable Content, Wii owners can now download new songs for 200 Wii points each (some are free). The Wii version doesn't have all songs for download unline the 360/PS3 but songs are added every week. Unlike Guitar Hero World Tour, 4 Wiis can connect to each other online which means you can pick up one instrument and find other band members online! (submitted by Kenny789)

6.Mario Strikers Charged

The multiplayer matches make use of Domination mode alongside Nintendo's much-touted inaugural online console offering free online; play friendly and ranked matches with or without your friends. (submitted by Ojisst)

7.Battalion Wars 2

Battalion Wars 2 allows you to command an entire army consisting of troops, tanks, ships, and planes. There is no offline multiplayer, but it has online. You can play against a friend (friend codes need to be exchanged) or against a stranger in 3 different modes. The first is co-op -- you and your team mate must work together to complete missons. Then there is assualt mode, where you either attack or defend a base; if you have succeeded in taking over or defending the base once the time runs out, you win! The last mode is skirmish -- there is a time limit and whoever has the most points at the end wins. Battalion Wars 2 is a great sequel to the original, and it has good online. 8.Excitebots

Excitebots is a fun and unique racing game that focuses on tricks and stunts, in addition to when you cross the finish line, to determine the winner. The single-player modes offer a variety of challenges and a huge number of unlockables, but the online multiplayer is what really shines. Go online against up to five other racers. Place a bet at the beginning of the race, and your winnings are multiplied if you end up in one of the top slots. Unfortunately, there is no splitscreen functionality for online multiplayer, but there is a two-player offline splitscreen mode, though you can't race against any computer-controlled racers, so it's just you and your friend. Poker race is also available online, in which you can compete to create the best poker hand by driving through a series of cards.

Other

These are good games that don't fit into any of the categories above. They aren't as widely appealing as the must-haves, but they're high-quality and worth a look:

1. Wii Fit

Wii Fit comes with the balance board (pictured above) and includes workout routines, yoga exercises, a body mass index calculator, and many minigames that make use of the balance board.

2.Trauma Center: Second Opinion (or its sequel, New Blood)

Use the Wii remote's pointer to take control of a futuristic surgeon as he operates. Each operation is a combination of action and puzzle elements, and some can be quite difficult. The short episodes make this game perfect for shorter play sessions. Both titles are of roughly the same quality.

3.Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles - On-rails shooter

This light-gun-esque shooter retells the Resident Evil story from the beginning in short episodes. The first-person perspective moves through the levels on its own while you point your cursor to shoot at pretty much everything. Lots of action, lots of things to unlock... Umbrella Chronicles supports two players and the Wii Zapper.

4. De Blob - Platformer

A unique platformer in which you take control of a character that repaints a city that has lost all its color. It supports 4 player offline and has 8 multiplayer modes. Consisting of beautiful sound tracks and great visual design. Winner of Gamespot's "Best Australia-Developed Game of 2008" Award. (submitted by wiifan001)

5.House of the Dead: Overkill - On-rails shooter

6.Madworld - Action/Beat 'em up

Madworld is the most violent game on the Wii. Period. In each level, your goal is to mutilate your enemies as creatively as possible by combining as many painful techniques as you can before delivering the final blow. Once you've racked up enough points, the boss battle (easily the highlight of each level) will be available. Each stage has at least one Bloodbath Challenge that lets you quickly score points in entertaining ways, such as hitting an enemy's head through rings with a golf club or tossing as many enemies into a pit before a bed of spikes crashes down on them. These challenges are also available in a two-player multiplayer mode, where you can compete for the highest score on your console.

7. Tiger Woods 10

Some hail Tiger Woods 10 as the best golf game ever made, mostly due to its fantastic controls that faithfully recreate the real thing. It supports Wii Motion Plus, which is sold separately for $20 or packaged with the game for an extra $10. Aside from the controls, the game offers daily and weekly online tournaments with leaderboards, a mode that lets you pit your score against the pros as they play real courses in real-time, and online multiplayer with up to four players at once.

8.Little King's Story

Little King's Story is an RPG-RTS hybrid that would likely be the result if Pikmin were to have a child with Harvest Moon (especially seeing how the game's executive producer was the creator of Harvest Moon), albeit with less of a focus on farming. As young King Corobo, you must lead the tiny, run-down village of Alpoko to become the greatest kingdom in the world, and achieve world domina-- er, unification. In order to do this, you will have to turn your lazy citizens into workers from roughly 20 unique cIasses, each with their own uses. Boss fights help expand your kingdom in order to unlock new areas, quests, and cIasses. The game is also incredibly long, lasting anywhere from 30 to 50 hours depending on your difficulty setting (which you can adjust at all times) and your devotion to the sidequests. WiiWare

WiiWare games are available only for download through the Wii Shop Channel. They're brand new games developed specifically as a smaller, cheaper alternative to full retail games. Here is a list of the most downloaded WiiWare games amongst Gamespot users. These are the most recommended WiiWare games:

I haven't played Ghost Squad or House of the Dead, but Umbrella Chronicles is an awesome light-gun-styIe game. It has lots of levels, TONS of collectibles and unlockables, a great storyline if you're interested in Resident Evil, and fun co-op.

House of the Dead is a simple port of the old arcade games, nothing new. Not even updated graphics. I'm not sure if that affects your decision, but it's probably good to know.

I will not put into "high priority" games to get... depends which games you want 1st... in my case was NMH, RE4, RE:UC.. and a few others, inlcuding others consoles...

That said, Z&W is pretty good. If you can pass the cartoonish sty.le of the characters, the game has pretty good puzzle, some pretty hard imo.. :P

Well, the Must Haves section is actually in order from highest to lowest priority (all in my opinion, of course). You should get them all eventually, assuming you have an interest in the genre. If you have nothing else to play, Zack and Wiki is great. It plays at a completely different pace from most games, though, so it's easy to shelve it in favor of a more action-packed or story-driven game. But you can always come back to it whenever you want since it's a level-by-level game.

Um, those arn't really the best.

I've gotten several requests to add that to the list... Well, Radiant Dawn at least. Path of Radiance is for the Gamecube, and it seems is generally more accepted than its Wii sequel. So which do you mean?

I'm looking into Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance for GC and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. Which one is better? I've heard many great things about Path of Radiance, and not so great things for its sequel so I lean towards Path of Radiance already. But I want to know the general opinion of gamespot users.

The zapper: can be awakard to use the knife for what I have read. About this one I really do not like the way you have to play with the nuck.

Perfect Gun: has excellent reviews, some ppl have complain about having big hands and getting cramps after a while.

If I had to choose one bwt those I will pry go with the perfect gun.

Only you and like three other people would recommend William's Pinball. That's not to say it's a bad game by any means, it's probably great, but it's not one of the most recommended, which is what this thread is all about.

Then consider me for another. GeoW is the perfect space shooter on Wii, if only the competition would join it...

Also, we really need to update Fifa 08, Konami's PES is a lot smoother, plays fine online (although region-locked), and actually does what it promises. I mean the names and stats are wierd, but someone's probably painstakingly slogged through them so we don't have to.

I don't why I hadn't thought of this yet. Would you mind writing up a short description for it? If you do, PM it to me and I'll replace Fifa with PES. I haven't played either, but it seems pretty obvious that PES is infinitely better than Fifa.

RE4... is a great game and pry the best one for newcommers to the series... mostly bc is more action than dark atmosphere, which tend to be slow for some non-lovers of true survival horror...

I think u would enjoy it, and it would give you more hours for your $$$$

On the other hand .. RE4 is worth the 50US$, so if you would end up getting NMH any way now is a good opportunity... (no that it is not worth US$50.oo , but imo no more worth it that RE4

For me it's apples and oranges.

If you've always saved a few quarters for a pinball machine at your local quickie-mart and especially if you remember some of the tables in the game then Williams Pinball wont disappoint. Some posters have also said they're able to find it for 19.99 so that's good as well.

MLB Power Pros is a great game but be prepared to do some switching around because it's got old rosters by now and no online updating. No online anything actually so you may not like it for that and swear until you fix the rosters lol. Though it's got the baseball RPG and the mix of solid controls and even some motion game modes.

Really it's you're etiher a baseball fan or a pinball fan more lol

I'd wait for a few reviews to come in just to see if all the mechanics work. If they do and it sounds like the game you're interested in then jump in with both feet and pick it up. I'd wait a few days just to see what reviews come in for it

If you're interested in Wii Fit, then you should probably get both eventually.

I'd recommend getting Mario Kart first, since it's a highly addictive game with good replay value due to the online features. It's also a much less expensive multiplayer game, since you need extra balance boards to play simultaneous multiplayer in Wii Fit.

Well Right now im stuck between a rock and a hard place, Ive got my "game buying descision" down to two choices, Either buy Okami or get a Wii Points card and download Star Fox 64, Super Mario Bros 3 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3(I have enough points because i have some leftover) all games ive never played. So which is the best choice since i really can't go wrong?

take the points. okami cannot compare to the classics you haven't played. i would recommend Sonc 2 over Sonic 3 though. if you haven't played 2 yet, its the best of series.

the points... Okami is a great game (the ps2 version at least, gonna get the wii version later on...) but I will get the points, the VC would not price drop, Okami may or you can just get a used copy with some good deal.

Just Super Mario BROS 3 beats Okami even today. Throw in the other two titles and you're good to go.

For Star Fox 64, Super Mario Bros. 3, and Sonic 3, I find it's a fairly difficult decision to make since Okami is such a great game and the VC titles are great classics.

Even so, as chang said, you could find Okami later for a cheaper price.

Still, my recommendation is for Okami.
