2008 is the year of third party software for the Wii and its only going to get better in 2009. I'm so sick of people here complaining about the lack of first party software when there already have been/will be a ton of great third party titles coming to the Wii.

A lot of you guys need to expand beyond first party software and look into third party software. Here is a list of current third party software and their respective scores from IGN which are out of 10.

  • No More Heroes - 7.8
  • Bully: Scholarship Edition - 8.0
  • PES 2008 - 8.6
  • Lego Indiana Jones - 8.0
  • Okami - 9.0
  • Boom Blox - 8.1
  • Blast Works: Built, Trade, Destroy - 8.1
  • Pinball: The Williams Collection - 8.1
  • Rock Band - 7.9
  • Guitar Hero: Aerosmith - 7.6
  • Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon - 8.4
  • We Love Golf - 7.4
  • MLB Power Pros 2008 - 8.4
Now. That's for the first half of 2008. What about the other half? This is what we have to look forward to:
  • Mega Man 9
  • Guitar Hero: World Tour
  • Rock Band 2
  • Call of Duty: World at War
  • Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars
  • Lego Batman
  • De Blob
  • Samba De Amigo
  • Rayman Raving Rabbids TV party
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
  • Star Wars The Clone Wars
  • Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of a New World
  • Little King's Story
  • Sonic Unleashed
  • Sam and Max Season One
  • MySims Kingdom
  • Skate It!
  • Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop
  • SPRay
  • Deadly Creatures
  • FaceBreaker: KO Party
  • Madden 09
  • Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09
  • NHL2K9
  • Sim City Creator
  • Tenchu IV
  • Rune Factory
  • Sky Crawlers

As you can see, there is something there for everyone. Bolded ones are the exclusives. So, as I've said many times on this board before. Look beyond first party. Look at all those 3rd party games with potential to be great on Wii Hardware. Oh and along with those, you have your first parties. So, happy Wii gaming this year. It's going to be a great year.

2009 will just keep getting better with these titles:

  • Spore
  • MadWorld
  • The Conduit
  • Arc Rise Fantasia
  • Oboro Muramasa Youtouden
  • Fragile
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers
  • Spyborgs
  • Monster Hunter 3
  • Sonic and The Black Knight
  • Rygar
  • Fatal Frame IV
Enjoy 2008.

I'm still getting a 360 + Banjo for Christmas regardless, but there are a couple of decent games up there.

I'm getting a 360 too -- but I won't deny the awesomeness that is Wii's line up:|

Year of the Third Parties? The Wii has the lowest score average of this generation (and I think the last one as well) and yet you call it the year of the third parties? Maybe in an ominous way...

Using Metacritic's search mechanism, I have here the full list of 2008 third party games scoring 75% or above (aka. good games.) In descending score order they are:

Okami (Port of PS2 game)

Boom Blox

No More Heroes

Bully: Scholarship Edition (Port of PS2 game)

Pro Evolution Soccer 2008

BlastWorks: Build, Trade, Destroy

Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection

Rock Band

FFCC: MLaaK (WiiWare)

LostWinds (WiiWare)

MLB Power Pros 2008

Toki Tori (WiiWare)

Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures

FFF: Chocobo's Dungeon

Gyrostarr (WiiWare)

Order Up!

It's not exactly overwhelming.

I think people ignore third parties cuz the games, while several of them high quality, are just not the games people are used to. Which is troublesome, because its hard to recommend it someone if they don't understand what it is about or how it could be fun. Some games are just hard to compare because they are different enough to be fresh.

The titles for me are:

Little King's Story, De Blob, Sky Crawlers, and Rune Factory.

Not really when you take out the games that people have played before on PS2 and consider that WiiWare titles are typically shorter than full releases. Also consider that some are not interested in sports games (MLB, Pro Evo) or casual games (Boom Blox, BlastWorks.)

In any case, it's certainly not enough to make the absurd declaration that 2008 is the year of the third parties.

Yeah, this is the year for third parties to shine. Especialy on this second half when Nintendo is only releasing a couple of big titles.

I would say it is, since 2006, and 2007 were not the year of the 3rd party and 2008 has gotten a lot more support, plus all of the great games to come in September-December.

Just because the Chinese are no longer forced by the Emperor to work to death on building the Great Wall doesn't mean you can declare 2008 the Year of Human Rights in China.

Thats not the fault of the console. Thats the fault of the person who's buying the console for what it is.

Wii is not a PS3/360 clone.

That's the worst example I've seen seeing as how hosting the Olympic games in China, is going to go strides for Human Rights, in certain areas. Not to mention cleaning up the environment.

So lets, call 2008 the Year of Human Rights, going green, and the Olypmic games in china.

There is a lot to choose from -- However, there are not many big named/well known titles.

And preaching to gamers who are avid enough to discuss gaming on forums about the importance of looking at third party titles is like preaching to the choir about the importance of an appreciation of music.

See the China analogy. Just because this list sucked a little less than the last one doesn't mean it's time to crown 2008 as the year of the third parties. 10 games, 4 WiiWare titles, and 2 PS2 ports. YOU ARE TOO GOOD TO ME, THIRD PARTIES!!!!! *sob!*

We are not looking at what has come out only. 2008 goes from Janurary 1st- December 31st. So in the next half of the year there is going to be a lot more 3rd party titles that are good. You cant judge the 3rd parties by only the first 8 months

Average would mean below a 5.0. 7.0+ scores = 'GOOD' it even says it.

The last bit you said is exactly why the mentality a lot of Wii owners need to get rid off.

Much like the mentality that games can only be enjoyable if review sites give them an average of 8.5 or higher.

Judging games solely by scores is stupid, especially seeing as how GS hasn't been spot on lately. No More Heroes got a 9? I mean, I liked it, but Metroid Prime 3 was worlds better, and it got an 8.5! MP3 deserved a 9 or a 9.5, whereas NMH deserved more along the lines of a 7.5 or an 8. 7.5 isn't a bad game, but you have to put up with some faults to enjoy it fully, whereas a game that gets a 9 or a 9.5 should be thoroughly enjoyed by anyone who likes the genre, in MP3's case, a first person adventure. So going just off of scores is stupid.

Next... I don't think enough people have mentioned THE CONDUIT enough. I mean, seriously. Someone's gotta mention THE CONDUIT a whole bunch more. Seriously. That game looks freakin' sweet. Check out some of the textures on that one mini-boss if you can find a high-res video of it. And the Wii needs more FPS games, especially considering how well they would be able to optimize the controls. I've played Halo 3, and now I'm waiting for the better gaming experience, which, if no one's mentioned it enough already, is THE CONDUIT. Seriously. Check it out, and mark it on your calender if it's got a release date yet. That's T-H-E C-O-N-D-U-I-T. :P

The only first party game on my holiday radar is Animal Crossing (I'm getting Wario Land when it comes out). On the other hand, Sonic Unleashed, Mega Man 9, Deadly Creatures, and many more 3rd party games look really interesting. Great post.;)

Caer_Death

Go look at ign's pages on it. You'll like it there. (The game looks AWESOME!)

So many games, so little time.

I have to get a lot of those before the year is over.

Half of those games on the list are multiplat. I mean yes it is good if you only have a Wii, but if you own one of the others or both of the other ones than it doesn't shine so bright.

De Blob is cool

Sam and Max is a port

Warioland is good, but just another one of those classic play style games

Fatal Frame has sucky controls according to IGN

Tenchu isn't really that cool of a game. Z sucked really bad. The only thing good about it is the cinematic stealth kills, the rest of the game is just ok.

Games like Wii Sports 2, Madworld, Spore, The Conduit and others aren't coming out until sometime significantly into 09.

Tales of Symphonia seems like the only game that actually might bring gold. Nintendo might have gotten back into good graces with 3rd parties but the quality is rather low.
