I say 2-3 years.
I mean the Nintendo DS debuted in 2004 and the Wii debuted in 2006 so now we have 3DS coming I think it's safe to say that we will have at least 3 more Years of the Wii.
When Nintendo either:
A. Stops making a profit from it.
Or
B. New systems come out to compete with it.
My guess is 3-4 years before the Wii completely gets canned. I assume that's when we'll start seeing the new systems. That being said, it's going to be an interesting next gen....
I think it is going to launch at latest November 2012, although could quite possibly launch november 2011 (if history repeats itself). Somewhere inbetween those two dates is possible as well, although doubtful.
I'd say it will be at least 2012 before they even announce the console. Maybe 2013-2014 when they release it. But that's just my guess.Hungry_Homer111
Haha I don't get where people get these crazy numbers from. It won't be anything past November 2012 I would bet my life (just kidding ;))on it :P. I just wonder why people think this gen is SO much different then others? Nintendo has always done 5 year cycles of home consoles and your saying the Wii could have as long a life cycle as 8 years.
The NES and PS2 are the only consoles I can recall that beat out the average lifespan of 5-6 years. Fall 2012 or bust for Nintendo as the public will be clamoring for a new console while Sony and Microsoft seem to have no intention of releasing before that. Then again, why would they lend to speculation and help their competition with a timetable? My bet: All three will announce new consoles for Fall 2012 next year to avoid hurting sales for the remainder of 2010 and early 2011. Move and Kinect are no different than Sega CD and 32X in principle. (Delay making real moves, confuse consumers, play the brand loyalty hand) Making Sega type decisions can't possibly be a good idea, lol.

I think Move and Kinect are coming out to prepare users for a more motion oriented future of consoles. Maybe I am wrong, but I would iimagine the Move could become the new controller for PS4, but Kinect...hmmm not sure how that would work lol. Not to say there won't always be classic controllers like Nintendo has done. Well I hope new consoles come out in 2012 as I want to buy a Wii right now and want as much time as I can get out of it. Regardless it will serve as a gamecube as well for me due to mine not doing so hot anymore lol.

Agreed. Move is definitely going to be carried forward. I wouldn't be surprised if Kinect is compatible with the new XBOX to avoid alientaing those who bought it. The problem with all these controllers is the insane cost of providing four of everything if you own each console, lol.
Nintendo really got me this gen with four Wiimotes, then another four with motion plus, four nuchucks, two of the original classic controllers and two of the new classic controllers. Not including the ones I received as pack-ins with the console that's around $450....yipes.
1 the ps3 launched with motion tech not many used it , so i dont see how move will be any indication of ps4 ,,
and as far as nintendo is concerned
id say 2012-2013 but it could be as early as next year , ,and theyd beat microsoft and sony by 4 if they dont be foreced,
by the time sonys and ms is readyin its 4th and 3rd cosnole nintendo would be on its wii3 or what ever ,
(and release it 1 yr after ps4 720 actually come and nintendo would be victorieous because of newer technology and stuff

Well it seems to be popular opinion, especially with the media, that this generation of console will likely last longer than any previous generation as a result of the downturn of the economy and the extremely high costs of game development. Both Microsoft and Sony are introducing new controllers to their audiences, which have themselves been expensive investments, so it is looking more likely that these 3 home consoles are going to be around for a lot longer than we had originally expected. On top of that, Nintendo have no need to rush out a new console. They're in a strong enough position that they can wait for Microsoft or Sony to make the first announcements of a new console.
[QUOTE="NaveedLife"] Nintendo has always done 5 year cycles of home consoles and your saying the Wii could have as long a life cycle as 8 years.SteveTabernacleThe NES was the primary console of Nintendo damn near a decade. As far as why people think this gen is so different from others, dude, are you unaware of the fact that we are currently in a deep worldwide economic recession that shows little signs of letting up any time soon? That and development costs are barely able to be kept up with by most developers as is, even more powerful systems would worsen this.
All three of your points were spot-on. I think it's easy to forget that the success life span of a game system isn't dictated by some pre-written rules or principles; all systems succeed and live on based on the current circumstances they're facing and what they're able to do to keep themselves relevant in the marketplace.
At the moment, the Wii is still very much in the driver's seat as far as being the gaming console to own, and considering that it's also the most affordable of the available systems during a rather difficult financial time, it presents a situation where the Wii could definitely last longer than the 5 years that are claimed to be a console's life span. It might also help that Nintendo isn't going to be forced to release a new system anytime soon, unless the Wii manages to lose A LOT of steam, as the other two consoles are going to be on the market as long as they can just to make up for the losses that's been accumulated from production. The biggest threat the Wii might have anytime soon is the 3DS, and you can be sure that Nintendo isn't going to let its portable steal all of the thunder from its most successful console to date.

Well put. I agree with all the points.I hope this gen lasts twice as long as usual ones. From talk, it is not impossible.
360/PS3 have the motion controllers.
I suspect Nintendo will release Wii HD. It will be the same console, just heavily updated. It will have the new online Nintendo has been hinting at. Release with Wiimotes with motion plus built in (and maybe upgraded a bit so it is a little closer to 1:1). Software updates, and DLC. Possibly 3D enabled also. Probably get rid of GCN BC if it adds to the price or takes room. And of course HD. Nintendo might re-release some games, so they are HD/3D compatible (or have a software update if that is possible.).
All for 250$ or 200$, with the regular Wii going down to 150$. I really hope this gen lasts longer. By 2011, announced next E3, as Pachter laughs at the entire gaming community.
That probably won't happen. If Nintendo was going to bother doing all that it would just release a real new console. It doesn't need to anyway, obviously the majority of people aren't that worried about HD gaming and especially 3D gaming since the Wii is dominating the market so much and the amount of people owning 3D TVs is very limited.I hope this gen lasts twice as long as usual ones. That would be a disaster from a manufacturing, development, and even logical standpoint. What you're asking for is Nintendo to pretty much to invest into creating products that would justify a NEW system, but have the system in question itself still be a Wii at the end of the day (minus GCN BC, which would make things even worse). The current Wii library is incompatable with most of the features you speak of, making them useless for the hundreds of games already on the market and the millions of consumers who own them. Re-releasing games just to support HD/3D would be a waste of time and resources for not only Nintendo, but whatever third party publisher/developer it could manage to convince to follow suit (and my guess on that would be none of them). The only 'update' here that is even remotely appealing would be with the Wii Remote w/ MotionPlus idea, but with the amount of Wii Remotes already sold and the small number of games that even use MotionPlus to begin with, even that isn't too smart of an idea, especially when it's not going to be the standard controller.
Yet another reason (or reasons) why the whole Wii HD thing is nothing more than a silly illusion (and why no one should ever bring up anything Pachter believes, especially if it concerns Nintendo).
I don't know about a new console, but I'm pretty sure the Wii will be supported for a VERY long time, as there are a hell of a lot of Wii owners, such as my grandparents, who are not aware of generations of consoles and will not be spending another £200+ on a new gizmo that they don't have a specific interest in.
Eh, I think the Wii has a good 3 or so years left. With the economy and stuff, I'm sure everyone's okay with what we have now. I kind of expect Nintendo to release the next gen console first, though. Honestly, I could care less when the next gen consoles are released. There's enough fan boys for individual consoles already. I don't need to hear my friend Dillon tell me how much more bad@$$ the PS4 is over the Wii2.
At the earliest, I would expect a late 2012 release for the Wii successor. But it's probably going to be a bit later than that.
LOL! I know, right? I agree with ya, there - I'm still rockin' the PS2 (and just started playing FF1!!)Eh, I think the Wii has a good 3 or so years left.
