I am going to get a Wii for my birhtday and I was wondering if it was possible to turn your wii not connected to the interent 24 seven because i think that would bog down my internet network thanks

yes you can but it wont bog down your internet connection anyway

Yeah, it only maintains a connection which doesnt budge your network's capabilities. And even when its downloading content, weather automatic or manual (VC games, and new Wii Channel updates) it doesnt take up much bandwidth.

As people above said, yes it is possible, but there is no point to do so because the connection takes up VERY little of your bandwidth, if you will request the console to download automatically then it might, but otherwise you have nothing to worry about.
