Just hooked up my new Wii. Set screen to 16:9 and resolution to 480p... the menu is still showing in 4:3. This normal?

Just loaded up RE:4 Wii Edition and it is also not showing in widescreen. I have double checked that the Wii menu is set in 16:9 and resolution is 480p.

Anyone heard of this problem?

Did you make sure the tv is set to display 16:9? Not really sure what the problem could be.

I don't think I have any setting to manually tell my TV to show true widescreen. I have used the same input for my Xbox360 and it just accepts the signal. Only option I have is to use a "Theatrewide setting" which basically just stretches the screen.

my tv does the same thing, it is in widescreen as you can tell by the boxes that show at the first of most games (zack and wiki, zelda, etc) I have a sony xbr970 and when i hit displays it shows 4:3, but still its widescreen.

You need the component cables to get 480p

I do have component cables. I just got off the phone with customer support and apparently the Wii does not support true widescreen and relies on your TV's "stretched mode widescreen" to compensate.

I was just going to say that. The 360 has "true" wide screen will the TV will automatically fill up the image. The Wii does not and you have to go set a Full, Theatre, or some form of Widescreen mode. Maybe its just my TV, but fullscreen looks better than my stretched WS so I just keeping in Full. :(
