gonintendo reports:

Amazon must be very, very happy with the Wii. It's always been a big seller for them, and today they're seeing quite the surge. Thanks to the $50 price drop, Wii sales have rise 1,700% today alone. That has put the Wii right at the top of the video game charts.

Also worth noting, Amazon has dropped the price of some of their Wii games. You can now get ExciteBots: Trick Racing to $19.98, Wii Play to $39.98, a Wiimote for $33.98, and Wii Fit for $79.98. Those should go along nicely with your new Wii purchase!

Well, I'd say that's a pretty big sales impact, wouldn't you? Is this the reaction brick-and-mortar retailers are going to see as well?

i guess that there are a few people that did not have a wii already and still wanted one.

As I said over on that site, the increase might just be because most people were waiting for the price drop, so they didn't buy one yesterday.

Let's say that 10 people bought a Wii yesterday. A 1,700% increase doesn't sound so great at that point, does it?

I'm not saying that that number is accurate, just an example. Unless Amazon gives us a real sales figure, this news is pointless. 1,700% could mean anything. It's just an arbitrary number on its own.

i know that a 1700% increase does not necessarily mean that a multitude of wii's sold, but it shows that the price cut has had an effect on their site.

Dear Nintendo,

Sorry I ever doubted you about this price drop.

Ok, while it is just one store and has no concrete numbers to crunch on, this is still pretty crazy for a system that was already a consistent top selling item. If this is ANY indication of things to come, which is still up in the air, Nintendo's in much better shape this holiday season than anyone gave them credit for. Obviously, this has sparked interest on Amazon, as not only is the Wii doing well, but the system's usual suspects in the software and accessory departments are also back on the top ten list in a big way (and Halo 3: ODST has to be like "what the heck is going on?" :P). It will be interesting to see how much of a jolt this thing really gets in the coming months.

Is this 1700% increase as compared to the sales the day before?

Because if so, then as others have said, why would anyone buy a Wii on the day before its price drops?

Well the Wii was selling quite well before the price drop so I would imagine the numbers would be substantial.

it's funny how numbers can confuse people so easily. TC, do you actually know what the 1700% refers to?

no, i know nothing further than what the article stated at gonintendo.com. i understand people being skeptical about what the numbers exactly mean. i'm curious as well.

Wow, the price drop has had a huge impact.

Still, 1700% sounds a little unbelievable.

Well these increases are always big because leading up to the price drop people stop buying the console in anticipation for it, then things go back to above normal which makes a huge precentage wise increase. Its the same thing that happened with the slim a few weeks ago, not a huge deal.

While I'm sure some people were holding back on the purchase until the price cut (making pre-cut sales artificially low and post-cut sales artificially high), not everybody keeps up with gamming news -- especially not Wii owners (we are in the minority here). 1,700% is a huge jump. To put some perspective on it, if one person bought a Wii yesterday, 1,700 people bought one today. It would be interesting to see the kind of increases the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 experienced.

The Wii is a main stream item, its not only "the hardcore gamer" concerning themselves with a price cut, the Wii getting a price cut is like the iphone getting a price cut. Everyone knows about it.

of course you dont, it's against what you said in the other thread >_> i dont see what is there to complain. i guess we should celebrate. more users giving more money so nintendo has even more money to spend on games that will give them more money to spend on more games to give them more... you got it.
