Well, now at least the obvious is confirmed -- launching in the major regions by the year's end.

--

On top of that, Yoshinori Ono from Capcom (the man behind the recent fighting games like Street Fighter IV) stated in an interview:

"What was shown at E3 is not a reflection of everything that this console is going to be able to offer. We have been trying the development kits and some of its new characteristics will improve its possibilities. It isn't something like Kinect or similar accessories, it's something different.I can't tell you more about it because, if I do, Nintendo will send assassins to finish me! But let's say that Wii U will be a console with so many unique possibilities that it will be difficult to show them in the box they are going to sell it in, or be published in magazines and other media."

What makes me excited personally is to see a top tier fighting franchise of sorts headed to the Wii U, assuming he is actively developing for it -- I hope for Street Fighter x Tekken or Super Street Fighter IV of some sort.

you missed an "i" in Yoshinori :P i'm not much of a fan of capcom fighting games, but if they jump in with full force, arc system will (hopefully) jump in too, which means BLAZBLUE ON MAH NINTENDO.

End of the year... I was expecting this thing around summer.. Hell at E3 we will hear about the new xbox.

Regarless, I will wait a while on the xbox, I am sick and tired of unreliable consoles... Nintendo usually makes a very durable/reliable system.

To be honest, no console should launch during the summer. Systems don't usually sell well unless they're launched during the holiday season. This is why I don't think the Vita's going to have an exceptional sales performance. Now, I would have loved to see the Wii U genuinely more powerful than the current consoles instead of about par, but they continue to rely on gimmicks instead of making the graphics the best they can. I know that's a negative thing to say, but that's just how I feel. Nintendo hasn't been a serious competitor in my eyes since the Wii came out.

If they weren't a serious competitor then we wouldn't see the competition being influenced by Nintendo's action.

This happens time and time again, every generation.

3DS launched in March and then became a ridiculously hot seller during Christmas. I'm sure Nintendo knows what it's doing if it launches in August.

if they weren't a serious competitor they wouldn't be outselling the competition in a 2 to 1 ratio.

I'm not saying they aren't. I just don't view them to be. I don't want to go much further cuz this will just become a system wars debate.

hot seller during Christmas.

Yes.... it sold well during the holiday season, and after a ridiculous price drop. Like I already said, systems launch very well during holidays seasons. If Nintendo wants another sell out, they should not release in the summertime. You only get sell out launches during the holiday season. When you launch your system, you want the numbers to do well right out of the gate, not well over the span of four months. Plus, it gives third parties more time to make launch titles. So.. honestly, there is no reason why someone SHOULD release a platform in the summer, except for impatient gamers.

You realize graphics are nothing but a gimmick as well right? But its a gimmick with finite potential, once something looks good, that's it. Take Uncharted 2, post that game, nothing else matter on the visuals front. So as far as gimmicks go, relying simply on graphics is a very short path. Once they make a really good looking Zelda/Metroid or something, there's nowhere left to go from there.

Anyway, it was already confirmed for this year and the end of year was abundantly clear, it was either the beginning of the year or the end. The middle, summer months, was never an option.

Well duh, and I put no stock in vague statements like that. It could mean anything. Give me something a little more concrete and I'll get interested.

They'll want to release it in plenty of time for holidays so they can get shipments out to shoppers in time. If they r sold out people will get something else

"But let's say that Wii U will be a console with so many unique possibilities that it will be difficult to show them in the box they are going to sell it in, or be published in magazines and other media."

Honestly, I see that being more of a red light than anything else. "Possiblities" sound great and all, but unless they're realized and evident, it's just talk. I heard more than enough of this kind of developer speak the past few years to simply just take it all with a grain of salt and shrug my shoulders at the end of the day. Something all too similiar was said about the 3DS just about a year ago from various developers, but it hasn't really panned out to anything extraordinary as we speak. Heck, most of the system's games would just as easily be as good, if not better, elsewhere, in fact.

I can see the "Playing=Beliving" kind of mentality that's trying to be presented here, but I'm just not buying it, not with what I've seen and not with the "play it safe" attitude that this industry has been all too comfortable with of late. If the Wii couldn't spark such an outspurt of inspiration for developers to think outside the box for a moment, I definitely don't see its more conventional-built successor doing it.
