*Note:  I have never had any problems with my wiimotes.

A friend who has children called me asking for help with her wiimote, the problem was that the system would not recognize left to right movements, but the pointer and up & down movements seemed to work.  (she could play Bowling, but not baseball or tennis).

Has anyone had this type of problem?  (also I am not going to call Nintendo support for a hypothetical question or to ask for help on someone else's system).

Also, the reason I put "has children" in there was b/c it might be their fault...or just a factory defect.

well, ive never heard of this happening, if theyve always been like that, then I say factory defect obviously, otherwise, contact nintendo anyway, and see what they say.  They can be surprisingly helpful.

I'm thinking it's just a defect, does this happen with more than 1 controller? If it does then the sensor bar is screwed up. Tell her to call Nintendo and they'll replace whatever the issue is for free.

If it is set up correctly the sensor bar is probably broken.

Tell her to try giving the wii-mote a smack as the accelerometer may be stuck.  Something similar happened to me so I called Nintendo, they told me to smack it downwards into my palm and it's worked ever since.
