I wanted to learn how to read musical notes, and play a guitar, but never had any training whatsoever in musical note readings.

Will I learn how to play basics of guitar with guitar hero 3?

I've been playing Acoustic for 2 years.

No, you won't learn how to do note reading, tabs, or chording through GHIII.

No, since Guitar Hero doesn't actually use notes at all, just coloured buttons. It will teach you how to move your fingers fast which will help if you wanted to move onto actual guitar, but that's about it. Since there are no strings and only 5 buttons, the similarity to a guitar ends about there.

Nope, i play electric, and while guitar hero is fun, it will have no impact watsoever on how you play guitar, the only thing that MIGHT help with is stretching your fingers and excersicing them

I don't even play guitar and I can tell you that you're not going to learn a single finger position from Guitar Hero 3.

I've been playing guitar for 15 years, and no you won't. I've noticed that when you know how to "really" play a song that's in the game, GH is actually harder to play, because of muscle memory.

Well, you could start with a tutorial, or take lessons.

I learned the extreme basics from here and touched on a some theory by just searching the net. The knowledge part of the guitar is fairly simple; it just takes a lot of time and dedication to actually be able to physically apply what you know.

No, although I play Bass and you'll learn GH3 quicker if you play guitar :P, not the other way around.

But that's just because you'll have a grasp on rhythm and beats, nothing technical...

Well yeah, primarily on that, but also pressing the buttons and strumming the.. string.. on the GH guitar is "somewhat the same" as playing a guitar, I'm not saying its completely the same, just the feel of it is a bit the same. So you'll get the hang of it quicker then someone who doesn't play a guitar, or instrument.

Can you race tuner cars because you played a lot of Need for Speed? Can you fly a fighter jet because you played Heatseeker? Can you storm Omaha Beach because you played Medal of Honor? So why would you expect Guitar Hero to teach you how to play the guitar?

I took classical guitar in schoollast year and GH does absolutely nothing. It can help with rhythm I guess, but as far as notes and music theory is concerned, you won't learn a single thing.

I may have only been playing for a year, but even I am positive that it won't really help, take lessons, or teach yourself. If your having trouble use instructional videos or anything else you can find on the internet. GH3 is fun, but it isn't the same as playing a real guitar (not bashing GH3).

GH3 may kind of teach you how to hold a guitar, but that's about it. It doesn't have anything that you can read musically and normal guitars have strings. I've also noticed that GH will put in extra notes that aren't even in the song. I know how to play a few of the songs from GH2 and when I was playing it I got mad because they were putting notes in the song where there weren't actually notes. Kind of annoying really...
But it's still fun to play.

I've noticed the same thing. I know how to play "Them Bones" on a real guitar, and when I played it on GHII, it didn't really even feel like the same song. Oh well, still a fun game, as long as you just think of it as just that: A game.
