Will there be a DS2?

Just curious, is Nintendo's next handheld gonna be a Gameboy, a DS, or something new? And if it's a DS we can assume it will have back-compat right?

Of course there will be a new handheld from Nintendo, just not yet. I mean, look at the success of the DS... You can't expect Nintendo to stop making handhelds when they're still making billions off it.

I don't see one coming out anytime soon, but could there be plans for another generation of Nintendo handhelds in the works? I wouldn't doubt it.

Yeah it definitely feels like the DS is more popular than GBA was... How often does Nintendo typically come out with a new handheld anyway? (Not talking about 'updates' here, like GBA SP or DSi) Honestly I haven't kept up with handhelds, ever =Pistuffedsunny

I think the best predictor here is to look at the lifetime of the Gameboy Color, of which the DSi is "somewhat" similar to. It lasted approximately two and half years; if similar, the successor to the DS will probably arrive around March 2011.

There's a decent chance the system could be announced next year. Nintendo may even be holding back on making retail DSi exclusives because they're working on titles for the next-generation handheld instead. But somehow, I doubt this is the case. 2012 seems like a more likely release date for the DSi successor, since the DSi itself still occupies such a high price point. Nintendo won't release another handheld until they can launch it at or below $199 while maintaining a profit.

hate to break it to you guys that the DS2 is coming sooner rather than later. sony is cooking up their succesor to the psp to be released next year. nintendo isn't gonna throw the DS out there against a goliath of a handheld for more than a year, and in my opinion, the DS has already peaked. one piece of evidence towards the phasing out of the DS is the relative absence of wi-fi enabled games this year.

ninty already has the deal for the tegra chips, and likely has everything in mind as to what the DS2 will be. i know the DS XL is coming, but nintendo released the DS before their last version of the GBA, so i don't see that as a reason they will delay their next system.

my guess is a Q1 or Q2 2011 release, with the original DS receiving support for another year. DS2 will likely be backwards compatible.

Love when people ask this question. People were asking a few years after the original gameboys release whether there'd be a new one soon ... ... ... took 20 years before the gameboy advance was rolled out :p

Well my criteria for what the DS2 would be was actually met by the DSi so to me it's that, but yah, who knows.
