Everyone knows I hate this idea so I'm not going to tell you why it won't work due to system restraints but more software constraints. Compared to Brawl (which I love) this game would be lacking on content. Theres not going to be 50 stages or characters, no room for trophies or any such other collectable. It would seem dreadfully small and underwhelming after the glory of Brawl

Why would it lack content? It presumably would use an 8GB 3DS Cart, much like Brawl uses a dual layered DVD.
And to all the people who use the very good reasoning of: Pokemon on handhelds, Smash on consoles. Yes, Nintendo wins handheld wars because their competitors merge IPs onto multiple devices, and keeping certain IPs separate and exclusive to certain platforms is a good idea. Makes the hardware unique.
But,... Kid Icarus, Ocarina 3D, Star Fox 64 3D, Resident Evil Mercs + Revelations, Paper Mario, among others show that Nintendo is willing to make more "console" like games for a handheld
I mean, Kid Icarus doesn't look like a handheld game, nor does the two REs, and Paper Mario is conflicting with the long running handheld franchise of Mario & Luigi. But they are there. And they are totally cool with third parties doing it too. The hardware is finally there for it.
Nintendo is rewritting the rule book, it may or may not work out. But you can't really say that they won't make a Smash on 3DS, since they decided to make Paper Mario, Ocarina (a non-top down zelda) and Kid Icarus
