Do Virtual console games work with the Gamecube controller, or do you have to get the Classic controller?

You can use most GC controllers, but be careful about a few off-brands suddenly not working.

The problem comes with button-mapping, if you can't change it in-game you're stuck with default. CC's default is a lot smoother than GC's, which I feel was wholly intentional so you had to invest in a CC.

Technically yes. Though the button placement doesn't work well with many SNES titles.

That is why you buy these, If you still have an SNES Controller or NES controller.

Their is also an NES version and they are only $20.

But that won't work with N64 or most Wii games that have gamepad support (no analog sticks!). Besides, IMO the CC overall is superior to the SNES controller in terms of ergonomics and construction (the SNES controller always felt "mushy").

You could, but the button layout on many games aren't too good. Just go out and buy a classic controller, I happen to like them.
