yes, a simple grain of dust/particle will slice up your screen. I learned this the hard way, was not aware my original ds stylus had some particles on it, did a few swipes on the screen, and went ahh ****. Not gonna let that happen again, all it takes is one nasty particle.

Always use screen protectors on all my devices, why would you not? It adds to the longevity of the device and keeps the screen scratch-less like the day you bought it. Come the day you want to sell it, take of the screen protector and your screen is still shiny new like it was hot of the press!

i use one on my phone, but i had a orginal ds (sold it in less than a year) and had a protector on there and it did not fit the whole touch screen (slight gaps on all sides) so im going to try my luck without one for awhile. but if i get a game that i think ill use it vigoursly ill probably look for one

If I manage not to screw up the process, yes.

Yes I ordered a Hori one for 3DS.
Hori ones are quite serious: vid.
Though I tried it for the DSlite and kind of messed it up a few times.

There are two things that go wrong easily. Air bubbles, and dust.
Do this process in the bathroom, after having a hot shower, and dust won't be an issue.
As for air bubbles... well... I hope you'll be a bit lucky :P

My DS doesnt seem to need it, though I might rethink it. I looked at my screen and it was ridiculously dirty. Not sure if its scratched, but when I finally clean it (I always try when Im playing a game, only to give up because it makes me push the wrong buttons or such) Ill look for scratches and decide from there
