Wireless Access Point and Router are both the same...

The Router acts as a Wireless Access Point which allows you to get online. I suggest if you have a Router to just connect your Wii wirelessly (Wi-Fi). Ethernet for the Wii (Wired) requires an adapter which is a pain. As for lag, as long as your signal strength is high (Don't hook up your Wii downstairs in the basement and have your Router in the Attic) you shouldn't have any lag.

Hope that helps!

P.S. Linksys Routers are pretty sturdy.

I would probably get the router if you have the money or can get one cheap.

I have the Nintendo Wi-Fi adapter, bought it when It first came out with the DS, and I have had very few issues except disconnecting once or twice. But that might be my connection.

But you will get more use from a wireless router in the future with other systems or future products overall.
