Without backwards compatibility with the GC, would the Wii have been a success?

It seems that many Wii owners have no idea the system plays Gamecube games, or have no interest in playing Gamecube games. Brisk sales of Resident Evil 4 Wii edition reinforce this point.

How many Wii owners play Gamecube games? If not, why not?

Lots of good Gamecube games out there.

Most users picked up RE4 for the Gamecube for their Wii. It's been sold out for months at many major retailers.

Since this is about Gamecube games shouldn't it be in the other area?

Perhaps they're interested in all the new content (vs the GCN version) as well as the new controls? Hmm?

People wanted Wii games so they bought Wii games. I'm sure some of them don't want to buy a controller, memory card, and the game just to play the games. I would but I already have all that stuff from last gen.

I think it would have definetly hurt the Wii not because tons of people use their system as a GC but because people would have frowned on its lack of backward compatibility. However its very unlikely that the Wii would have lost its compatibility with the GC because its basically GC technology.

Fire Emblem was the only GC game I've bought and played on my Wii. IT's nice to have backwards compatibility and the Wii can now play every single Nintendo system but that doesn't mean you need to buy those games to make it a valid purchase. It's just nice to have the option.
