Don't get me wrong, Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be an excellent game, but will it be basically more of the same as the last game, just with Yoshi? One could argue that Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, and Mario Galaxy are basically the same already, but you know what I mean. What will the NEXT Mario game be when it comes out? After you've gone into space, have you done it all? With all the money Nintendo is swimming in, Mario certainly doesn't NEED a makeover, but it would be kind of nice.

I want an Open World. No, it doesn't have to be like GTA, but they could, at least, make it like Zelda or Metroid, where it's one continuous experience as oppose to the current "THIS is the hub world, and THESE are the diffrent levels. Have fun getting stars" model. It's nothing more than a flashy, interactive menu. Also, it would be nice to have a Mario game back on Earth (if that's even the planet their on). We always hear about the Mushroom Kingdom, but all we ever see is the castle. It would be cool to have a Mario game where you actually explore the city or country or whatever it is Peach governs over. If not in an Open World, at least let it be a clever theme for the Worlds/Levels.

Those are just some ideas. Once again, I want to say that I know I will love Super Mario Galaxy 2, it's just that I'm concerned for the future.

Nintendo have managed to change Mario through the years keeping it fresh and good and it will be the same for the future.

I think Galaxy will be fine. An open world game would be interesting, but I don't think it would work because all Mario does is run, jump, and what ever the current power up is. For an open world, even a small open world like Metroid, you need alot of special abilities that are always there. An open world Sonic would be cool though......

I don't think an open world Mario game would work because then everything will look similar, the good thing about Mario games is that almost every level is unique.

When you think about it, Zelda and Metriod do the same thing as Mario. (Hyrule Field would be the hub, and the various other areas are levels. Wherever Samus lands her ship is the hub, and each Elevator takes you to a "level"), but they do an acceptable job of tricking me into thinking it's one experience. The way it's seperated in Mario games is so clunky and obvious.

I don't think everything would look similar. I point at the other 2 giant Nintendo franchises again as an example. They vary the environments with little trouble. As far as the special abilities go, giving Mario more than one at a time would kind of be a big departure from the "Marioness". The only thing that comes to mind would be interacting with the whichever environment he's in uniquely.

In any case, I'm not saying that Mario needs an open world or the franchise is over, I'm just wondering what comes after Galaxy 2. Heck, when I'm done playing, I might be delightfully surprised and find myself begging for part 3. However, if they don't make Part 3, what can Mario do that he already hasn't? I guess Nintendo's strategy is that I will be even more excited when I get the answer to that question since I don't know now.

If you want an open world in a mario game, may I suggest maybe Paper Mario? Anyways, I don't think there's any worry about Super Mario Galaxy 2. It's a bit more safer sequel, but hell, another masterpiece like Galaxy with 90% new content is more than good enough for me. As for Mario's next 3-D game, I wouldn't worry about that either. Whatever's in store for the plumber will bound to be great.

I think hub worlds are better suited for Mario. I also think this whole debacle about Mario Galaxy 2 is nonsense. What is so bad about a sequel? This is the first time in like 20 years that Nintendo has made a direct sequel on one console. I don't know about you guys, but I LOVED Super Mario 3. Super Mario World 2 was awesome, but I would have loved to see another game like the first Super Mario World and I would have loved to see another game like Super Mario World 2. Mario 64 2 would have been great. Nintendo has a bad habit of making a great game and then never ever giving you anything like it ever again. That's cool and creative, but as a gamer I'd love to revisit some of this stuff. I've never seen so many people pissed off to get a sequel to a great game. It's kinda baffling. Everyone gets crazy insane amped for stuff like Assassin's Creed 2, Call of Duty 54, Resident Evil 5, Metal Gear Solid 4, but dear god you make a mario game with a number behind it and now sequels are of the devil.

Actually 100% of Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be new Content. It's just 90% of the Content is new to Miyamoto and his team. The other 10% is stuff that Nintendo had but they couldn't fit it into the original Super Mario Galaxy.

When it comes to Mario, I have faith in Nintendo. When it comes to Zelda, I have faith in them. When it comes to Metroid, I have faith in them. When it comes to other games, Nintendo scares the crap out of me. Sometimes I wonder if they're the same damn company or not. :P

What I'm saying is, I'm not worried about Mario. I just wish they put so much care into other games as well.

Not in the least bit, Nintendo has never once failed to deliver on a Mario title so why would I worry about that starting now. And Galaxy was a great idea I am happy to get another shot at it, it would have been a wasted idea if they used it only once. Can't wait to play Galaxy 2.

Super Mario 64, for its time, was perhaps one of the greatest games ever. Sunshine? Was not. Galaxy I never god, but heard was pretty good... However, the games seem to be going downhill. I agree with your concern, and I believe a Mario game more similar to Zelda has huge potential.

i don't recall super mario sunshine being labeled as a letdown anywhere, either. it might not have the same amount of awesomeness as the other 3D mario platformers, but it's an awesome title nevertheless.

also, super mario galaxy 2 is bound to take my breath away. i pretty much love all mario games with a "2" following the title.

How are Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, and Mario Galaxy the same? They are some fo the more unique sequels out there. Look at any big series, if you call Mario sequel the same then SO many game series are basically clones by that standard.

I always thought a game where Mario travels through different eras of time would be cool. He could jump through the future where everything is chrome, fight his way through a goomba-knight infested castle of the middle-ages, and all that stuff. I'm not worried about where Mario has to go, I know Miyamoto won't fail us; ne never has.

Your ideas are great. I, too, wonder what it is exactly that Peach rules. We do get glimpses of their world in the Paper Mario games, but only certain locations. We never actually get to see any locations from the kingdom. I don't even know if those games are on the Mushroom Kingdom's planet. The best view of the planet is probably either from the Gateway in Super Mario Galaxy or Rainbow Road on Mario Kart Wii.

I would be interested to see if a more fluid overworld in a mario game would work well. The mario game that came closest to that was SM: Sunshine, and that game was kind of meh. SM: Galaxy wasn't very fluid in its "hub-world," but the gameplay was amazing - - still considered by many to the the best game so far this generation. So with a new mario game, I'm not looking so much towards a complex overworld, but a truly kickass mario game with awesome platforming elements. I think, in order to have a more complex overworld, you would need to have a more complex story, and that would not bode well with a mario game (IMO). Mario has always been played on a level-to-level basis, and the 3-D games are just an extension of that.

Kotaku took Miyamoto's comments out of Context. Both IGN and Gamespot said Miyamoto said that 90% is new the other 10% is stuff that couldn't fit in Super Mario Galaxy. All 3 were at Miyamoto's round table discussion and 2 of them have the same Translation while Kotaku has a different translation.

The funny thing about the Mario franchise is that Nintendo is always doing something new or different with him. For example, who knew Nintendo would make New Super Mario Bros? Just by them creating one new item, the Mega Mushroom, they in turn re-created every future Mario game because now the ability for Mario to grow even bigger is an new option. Also, who would've even anticipated that Mario's next game afterSunshine would put him in outer space?!?!? I never would've though they'd do that with Mario next. I guess once Mario goes into outer space we the fans think that no more can be done, right? Where will Mario be next?

"Don't get me wrong, Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be an excellent game, but will it be basically more of the same as the last game, just with Yoshi?" that's all i read. i've read about 847673 threads like this in the past week, and explained why it's not more of the same (or why it wouldnt be a bad thing) in all of them. so i just gave up. search threads before making new ones.

I think its fine the way it is, although i really enjoyed the open ended exploration of mario 64 and would like that but bigger in a new mario game. The open world stuff they should save for an RPG like Paper Mario or they should do something like what M&L Superstar Saga (GBA) did regarding the open world

Exactly people act as if they never seen a sequel before, generally the way a sequel works is its very similar to the previous game.

I wouldnt mind if the next mario was Super Micro Mario where he shrinks down and does his usual platforming, when you get to the biggest (galaxy/universe) the next step is to go to the smallest (although its kind of been done already).

I also wouldnt mind seeing mario go digital. Similar to being in a world from the Tron disneyMovie.

so hes saying games like gear of war can have "same game" sequals but mario isnt allowed?

and besides they allready said 90% will be new

Exactly people act as if they never seen a sequel before, generally the way a sequel works is its very similar to the previous game.

this is true but that can't continue forever. I have no problems with Super Mario Galaxy 2. Galaxy 1 was a huge change for the series and for platformers as an entirety so it still feels fresh and welcome but by the time Super Mario Galaxy 7 rolls around I think that new feeling will have worn off. And when the novelty does wear off, wheres mario gunna go? Space IS the final frontier after all.

when mario galaxy 7 appears, THEN you complain. *notices AW:DS tag* isnt it exactly like the previous AW games, but with some new additions? that's how franchises work >_>

Oh yeah because Mario is best know for his games coming in seven's, I thinking talking about 6 sequels is jumping the gun a bit, don't you think?. You never could have expected Mario Galaxy and the spherical gameplay, so you can't guess what the next move for Mario could be.

I'm exaggerating. I'd like to clarify, I'm not complaining. I have no problems with galaxy 2. All I'm saying is that at some point something will have to change and thats what this thread can be for. Again NOT complaining. In fact Zelda's been nearly the same for many a game now and I'm still not complaining.

Well if Mario's history is any indication I wouldn't be too worried as they have never stuck with one thing for too long. I expect this will be the last Mario 3D Mario for the Wii and the last visit to the Galaxy Universe.

Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy aren't the same games. :/
