Would the Wii have sold way less if it wasn't for Wii Sports?

Doesn't it seem like that? Millions of people just thought it looked fun for play tennis by swinging your hand, or bowling, or whatever. But was that the real thing that sold the Wii? It looks like most of the Wii's sales have been from non-gamers who were just interesting after seeing or playing Wii Sports. When after all it's pretty much a demo disk instead of a whole game.

Kind of dumb if you ask me.

Do I think it would have sold way less? Yes. Do I think that's dumb? Not in any form.

It was smart because

1)It was a good move by nintendo to line their pockets with more money. The wii advertises itself!

2)To the people who bought the wii for wiisports don't care if it's a "full" game or not. As long as it's fun. That's the point of games, no?

3)It showcases what potential capabilities the Wii has.

So, respectively, it was smart in a marketing sense, smart in the consumer sense, and smart in the technical sense.

Maybe.

Look at Japan, the only region were Wii Sporst is not Packaged with the system as is a Budget Title sold sperately, the wii is out selling the PS3 by a Six-to-One Margin, the only system that is challanging it is PS2, even then its out selling it by far. Wii Sports is selling very well by itself, in fact the only Nintendo made wii game that is selling more there is Wii Play, and its been Nintys #1 for months.

I would think so. It was a great way to show the potential for the system, so without a game, it probably would've sold less.

It would have sold less if it wasnt for wii sports, but that doesnt mean people are buying it just for wii sports. Wii sports shows the potential of the wii, therefore people buy it.

Sure. There are more than a few factors that could have cut into sales: if it were more expensive, if it had a traditional controller, if it weren't marketed for the masses. All these factors were positioned just right to have them all collectively created a huge hit.

There is one thing people didn't factor in when it comes to these casual players who just by the Wii for Wiisports.

That thing is Presents. Yep. Your dad has a Wii that your brother gave him and so you buy him Excite truck as a present. Well thats what just happened with my boss, who I thought would always just stick to wiiSports and guess what? he loves Excite truck:)

How many people who got a wii for just WiiSports will be given other games as a present? Will they then have a whole new world of games opened up to them? Will they buy the next in the series themselves when it comes out?

It will be interesting to see.

Definately, because Wii Sports is such a fun game. I've had my Wii since launch and I still play Wii Sports. In college, I brought my Wii over to a friend's dorm room and we got our RA hooked on Wii Sports. Instead of bi-weekly Halo2 matches, now we play Wii Tennis, Bowling, or Golf all night.

Yes, but it is difficult to tell just how many bought it for this single game or were entranced with the wii after playing with it.

Indeed. And Look at Japan, they had to buy it.

The Wii is selling more software than any other console (excluding the DS, which isn't a console anyway), so somebody is buying these games. In fact, every person I know that owns a Wii owns at least 3 or 4 games already, with plans to buy more, and they're not traditional gamers. It's just a fun system for casual gamers (and there's nothing wrong with "casuals" playing games, because one day they will be considered hardcore gamers. A sale is a sale, right?) and a good system for hardcore gamers as well. A lot of good games are coming out in the next year, so I'm happy.

Doubt it, in my opinion. Even before I bought my first real wii game, I almost never played this. It's a great tech demo, but I think it wouldn't cripple wii sales if it came seperate.
