They would be similar to Trophies/Achievements. I think a system like this would only benefit everyone. If there is a downside to it, I don't see it. The players that don't care about it can continue playing their own way while the players that do would have incentive to play more. I'm not saying we 'need' to have "badges" in order to for example, 100% a game. I'm well aware that nothing is stopping you from completing X or Y with or without this system. But at the same time, isn't that part of what having an online identity is about? Doesn't "Hi, I am daiyume. I earned the 'Failure level over...' badge by dying over 9000 times" give me more of an idenitity than just "Hi, I am daiyume"?

Nintendo is already planning to take a few extra steps to upgrade the online of the 3DS and I'm assuming Wii U as well. We'll soon be able to chat and invite (not sure about invites, can someone confirm?) players on our 3DS friends list to join our games. Now, if a friend you've invited saw that you earned the "Old Banana Trick" badge by tossing a banana on him in Mario Kart 7 or vice versa, I wouldn't need a badge to have a few laughs. But whenever I look at that badge and whenever he looks at my profile, we'll definitely remember how it was acquired. This is just my opinion and I'm interested to see what the rest of you think!

Miyamoto doesn't believe in them so its not going to happen. If they were to do it (which they never will) I would hope both console and handheld to be on the same system

Agreed that would be awesome. I don't see why Nintendo is so against it, I really don't buy that whole "it makes player go through the game in an unnatural way" or whatever it was that they said. Nothing wrong with giving people an option to get them or not. It also adds a lot of replayability to games.

As long as there are no pop ups when you unlock them or you can turn off those pop ups I wouldn't care.

For the Wii U and the 3DS that would be a great addition to Nintendo. If the Virtual consoles for 3DS and Wii U. Old classics from Nintendos past sytems could be supported via virtual console software update. The ones that are already on the VC.

I guess it's great for alot of gamers out there. For me, I don't care for it. I was a trophy hunter for a while. I liked it at first but honestly, it made me enjoy the game less. I was so caught up in trying to acquire everything in a playthrough, I would constantly look at the list to make sure i didn't miss anything. Andsome of those trophies are incredibly tedious.I especially hate those occasions where I have to playthrough most of the game justto get to a certain part.I guess it was an addiction and addictions turn into regrets later on. As of now, I'm enjoying Bioshock and Shadow of the Colosses in peace without putting any effort into trophies and it feels natural. That's just my experience anyway.

Yes, please.

I like achievements, it will make people play more and take on challenges, and then boast.

Well Nintendo has a quasi-trophy system set up with the 3DS and its coin feature.

Meh, their pointless and add zero to the experience for me. So I'm not missing them if Nintendo continues to ignore them. It is actually another one of the conventions of the modern industry that I have little interest in Nintendo adapting. I would rather in game rewards and unlockable over DLC and "ding, you got 10 useless points" And please no one respond saying "You can have both" because clearly that's not going to happen as you see on the HD consoles.

i voted no as its the closest option. i dont really hate achievements though. just give me the option to turn off the prompt (because personally i couldnt care less about them) telling me i got one and they can add it all they want. thats really the only thing that annoys me about them. imagine being really engrossed in zelda and all of a sudden *beep" you defeated your first boss *beep*. annoying.

Badge system reminds me of Pokemon... You know, lots of people would say it's a stupid idea, but lots of Pokemon fans have been collecting these "achievements" badges before it was even mainstream. :P I am not that much of an achievement hunter, so it wouldn't do much for me, but I vote yes because I just think it's still kinda neat. It's a pointless icon, but it's a pointless icon that lots of people will definitely start fussing over and collecting if implemented. I know lots of people who return to GameSpot once a year just to collect that "I watch E3 Live on GameSpot" Icon on their profile. I also tagged as many games as possible to get my "tagger maker" Achievement. I don't bother with tags nowadays.

3DS already as an achievement system, which I believe they are called medals. But ya I would like to see more of these medals in other games, Nintendo doesn't necessary have to use them, just give us and other companies the option.

Really? I don't see any medals anywhere. The only game I've earned 'medals' in so far is RE:Mercs and even then, its only within the game and not linked to my profile in any way.

As I recall, Shin Megami Tensei, SSF4, BB:CSII are some of the few that I heard about, and ya they aren't really linked, which kinda sucks, but I think it works for a nice little substitute.

someone really should figure out which 3DS games have medals.

I like them. I would prefer badges I guess as they would probably be more like PS3 trophies. I like the trohpy system better than the number based Xbox system. It's cool to have proof that you beat a game or did certain things in it. Sure some trophies/acheivements are dumb but overall they can add more value to a game. The closest thing Nintendo has to that is the play log thing in the 3DS. You get a little icon of every game you played and can track how much you played it or how often. I just like to put games in my system just to get those and rearrange them in my log book.

I like Trophies and Achievements so I would like them.

Miyamoto might not believe in them but he did incorporate an Achievement like system for Wii Sports Resort.

Sakurai incororporated Achievements sort've in Brawl. Retro did the same with Metroid Prime Trilogy and Metroid Prime 3.

I love badges not because they add replayability but because they give me incentive to begin exploring games initially. I think they'd be an awesome addition to a lot of the virtual console stuff and could breath new life into old games.

Rather than badges, I'd like to maybe see some unlockables or dlc. For example, When you beat Pilotwings you get a little pilot's hat for your Mii or something like that. Or maybe just some way to show people that you streetpass some achievement that you are proud of. If anything, I'd like it to affect the Mii. They are really cool altars that could use a little more customization.

I was playing Ocarina of Time for hours the other night, i thought afterwards how relaxing it was not to have achiveiments/trophies popping up all the time and just enjoying the game as it's meant to be played. I remember Oblivion was ruined for me because i was just looking at each achieviement and working on it instead of enjoying the beautiful world as it's meant to be. I don't see why a a fellow gamer should look a my list and just because i havent grinded fo 1000 hours looking for stupid items or turned to walkthroughs to get all achieviements makes them more or less a gamer than i. So I vote no 100%

So a trophy system of some sort may persuade you to play the game in a way that may not be meant by the developer because you'd feel like you achieved less or the game isn't complete unless you acquired them all, huh? Thats a pretty good point.

I'm personally trying to get Platinum on several titles simply because the system is there (and I do feel a greater sense of accomplishment) and many are tedious like you say, though if I ever get tired of it I'll probably end up the same and just ignore it altogether. But by then, my experience having went through all the games with a mentality to get that Platinum would've already affected my first time playthrough experience and impressions on those games. Platinum Trophy vs game experience, interesting point of view!

I'm not saying we should, but when a developer creates a game, they have a vision of what the game experience 'should' be like for the players. If a game is 'meant' to be played in any way, this is probably as close as it gets to that definition. All I was doing was pointing out a different viewpoint posted by someone else that I found to be interesting, a viewpoint different than my own that (as of now) still prefers to get all the Platinums.

When I play a game on the 360 or PS3 I still enjoy it the way it was. It's still cool to be able to have a record of what you accomplished though. Not everyone gets obsessed with getting all acheivements/ trophies (most don't really). I think it would be cool to have like a virtual sticker book or something for accomplishing videogame stuff, for you or friends to look through. Nintendo could always personalize it with Nintendo characters. Adding stuff to VC and wiiware games would be cool like having a ganon sticker for beating A Link To the Past or a cool Commander Video sticker for actually beating a level in a Bit.Trip game (that's something to be proud of). It's always cool to be able to see what your friends have been playing lately or how far they are in a game you are both playing.

Yup, I'd like a universal Nintendo system that incorporates all of that and somehow links it to our Mii's. We'd only need one Mii for both the 3DS and the Wii/U. It'd give our Mii's more meaning than just an appearance.

Makes me wonder though, I remember Miyamoto saying he'd like everyone to use Mii's and he'd like to spread them throughout the world. As of now, a Mii is just character with a name designed by a person that may or may not look like it that you would have the option to play in a few games. On the 3DS, you get to use a Mii on your profile that doesn't say anything about you besides your favorite game and what you're currently playing. I don't think he is naive enough to think that this is enough to achieve that. I'm not saying Nintendo has to allow badges in their games, but its hard to argue that other developers haven't already used such a system in one way or another with medals and:

Badges/trophies/achievements are an odd beast. I like to play some games with them in mind (i.e. Team Fortress 2) but for most games, I couldn't care less whether they exist or not. As articulation, I would say that games that already have a strong sense of purpose (such as Zelda games) don't really need achievements but more abstract games (like Elite Beat Agents) with no "set in stone structure" can benefit by adding more lasting replay value. Overall, I think they should add them because they don't really hurt anyone nad can't be to hard to implement.

no, nintendo's platforms are the one place without these things. Their games are good enough where I don't need to be motivated be achievements to play.
