I was thinking, what if nintendo offers a promo to upgrade the current wii to HD and 360/PS3 like graphics for $100 (exclusive of shipping fees), would people buy into it? The catch though here is that the only games for the upgraded version will be multiplats to prevent an uprising from people who won't and can't send in their wiis for an upgrade..

So, in other words $100 will buy you HD, Great graphics, games like assassins creed. But, games like metroid and zelda will never appear for the upgraded version.

So you're asking if we would want Nintendo to destroy themselves this gen?

No, I do not want Nintendo to damage themselves at their own hand this gen.

It wouldnt really be destroying it since the upgraded version can play the non-upgraded wii games, exclusive games are set for non-upgraded so the people who don't upgrade will be able to play the pride of nintendo and you still have to pay $100. If they were to introduce a new wii that would totally render the previous wii obsolete, then that would completely destroy the wii. Think of it as an just an extra add on to play multiplats for those who don't want to spend more money on a separate console. I think it would be a good idea.

No, it's not a good idea.

You're going to fragment the user base so that everyone can't buy the games while at the same time giving people instant buyers remorse since they paid this money for an incomplete console. Also you want Nintendo to come right out and say "We lied" because they've been saying there wont be any changes to the console as far as graphics, the entire "playing is believing" campaign becomes one giant lie.

Heck I'm not even listing all the negatives because it seems like piling on.

So pretty much you think that games not being able to be sold to all owners, making early adopters feel cheated, and making everyone at Nintendo look like the biggest liars in the gaming industry is a good thing.

It's an interesting viewpoint.

Not only is this against nintendo's marketing plans, it's also stupid. You cannot alter hardware with an external device. You can add more harddrive space ofcourse, but not CPU or GPU's. Do some research before making a poll about something that isn't possible in the first place.

Ok, whats with all the hostility? 1st, its just my opinion, no need to bash it, next i said IF, that means IF it were POSSIBLE, so I did not say it was possible but IF EVER it were possible, would you have it upgraded.

On another note, I dont think ot would contradict the gamplay over graphics campaign of nintendo since its would be just an optional upgrade. Just like how Hellgate london will be, If you buy the game, then you get all the basics, but if you want to spend a little more for a few benefits, then by all means do so. Its not like they would be saying, "the only way to completely enjoy the wii is to have the upgrade" but rather "if you dont want to spend money on an extra console, but enjoy the multiplats, you can just have the wii upgraded for $100 more"

console makers should make their consoles upgradeable with video cards too, not just harddisk (like PC).

then after, say, 5 years, they release a more powerful video card, and sell that to console owners, with future games specifically built for that console video card upgrade.

lol they just make a 10 year-future-proof PC-like motherboard as their console then...

It's not hostility it's just not a good idea and people are saying it.

It's like if you went into a forum and said "I have a great idea, it's part toaster part shower caddy"

Not a good idea and people would tell you that

Also just like I said before what you want to do is not only a bad idea but it's an idea that would damage the company, people who like the console and the company would be against the idea with a little extra "something".

completely unrealistic, but if something like that actually COULD happen, then sure, I'd buy it. I don't turn down better graphics, so long as the gameplay isn't hindered. having more ports over could also be interesting, as I'd be allowed to play some of the games I'm currently going to be missing out on. it'd also give devs more ability to make multiplatforms for wii, which could save some time and provide good games for all, rather than just exclusives.

You guys are not taking into consideration the development aspect of having good graphics. It's more than having a good video card and memory. It's the entire architecture and API's used in the architecture and graphics engine themselves that would need upgraded. Consoles are not like PC's and extensive quality assurance is done on the consoles specs to make sure everything comes out just right. If you keep changing the video card, API's and other items that will render games you have a testing nightmare as you now have to test you game under all situations (unless the developer is cheap and is only after your money). What I'm trying to say is even if you paid $100 more to upgrade your wii, the development of wii games will now need to take into consideration the second configuration and abilities. As you can see right now most developers are not buying into making wii games just for the controller let alone the control and a special configuration of the wii. Consoles are not the PC world as much as Microsoft would like you to believe that.

I would, because I've had my Wii since launch and I never play the thing because I can't stand looking at it.

Damn, you would think he said something sac-religous or something, its his opinion, now heres mine. The idea of an "updated Wii" has been thrown around, but it woud not be a $100 "upgrade". It IS plausible however that they come out with a new Wii sooner then later. They know they are behind graphicly, and with technology changing so quickly it would not be that hard for them to develop a new graphicly capable Wii. Especially if they took out the option to play Gamecube games ( ala PS3 ) they could probably keep the same case. And before yousay the technology/size argument on the system size, look what it does already in such a tiny machine. If I were Nintendo I would wait for at least a year or two, then beat Microsoft and Sony to the punch with a new system.

There is basically no point in playing a Wii on an HDTV so yes i would gladly pay an extra 100 bucks for half decent graphics.

It doesn't need it. I'd rather hold on to that $100 until FE10 and SMG come out.

Hahaha! I bought a wii because of its uniqueness and innovative controls. I don't care much about graphics as long as its a fun game, and if I do want a powerful game, I'd buy it for the PC. The thing with what you suggest is 100 bucks to get it to operate like a 360. You'd boost the price up tonear a 360's, and since they will no longer have the unique games, rather just games that are found on other platforms, why not just bypass the wii upgrade altogether and get a 360?!?!

Then, you can offer some stuff like the use of a keyboard and word processing, a mouse for FPS and even a useful operating system to run the programs more effeciently... wait, I already have one of those... it's apc.
